Londonderry I personally think a Team GB football team is a fantastic idea and a dead cert for a medal lol...............

Unfortunately, I feel that the NI content in any present UK team would be little or zero. Im afraid this would limit my interest in it.

I would not like to see it selected by including "token" players from each British statelet. There is enough sham in modern football as it is.

I would only support an "on merit only" selection system and sadly I feel this would not give our present players much chance.

It they are fielding a full strength Britsh 11, it will be England + Gareth Bale.
Please don't tell me Worthington thinks any of the current NIreland squad would get anywhere near the team!!!

He should do stand up.

Don't really care tbh. Agree with Neil Lennon in that the Olympics should be an amateur event though. I doubt if any professional footballers from Great Britain and Northern Ireland really dreamt of winning an olympic medal at football as youngsters tbh. It really is a bit of a non-event footballwise.

"It really is a bit of a non-event Footballwise" . Yes agree.

That is until a British 11 (really an English 11) win the gold medal. Then we will hear all about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For people who spend a lot of time posting on football forums there are some posters who seem to know virtually nothing about football. You'd almost think they'd another agenda for being here!

As it happens this is an u-23 tournament (well for 15 out of the 18 man squad anyway and one of the over 23's is likely to be David 'Brand' Beckham). It will start just after Euro 2012 ends which means none of England's 1st team squad (unless they somehow don't qualify for the Euros) will take part because no way will their clubs put up with releasing their players for two tournaments in one summer at such a young age.

So with Scotland unlikely to qualify and Wales & Northern Ireland definitely not the chances are any 'decent' young Irish (from the part of the island that qualifies for 'Team GB', or maybe they'll even call it 'Team UK' so you can feel a proper part of it!) Scottish or Welsh player will make the squad along with young English players who are on the verge of breaking into their squad.

As for dopey Nigel, well, maybe he isn’t so dopey after all. I reckon he must want the sack and what better way to go about it than speak out against the clear message from his employers?! We all know (as does Nigel) whatever FIFA say about this not affecting your status as an independent team they’d love to see your 4 organisations rolled into one on a permanent basis.

Oh, and one of the proposals for a kit is a Union Jack design, I wonder if Shane Ferguson will fancy it....................

Thats interesting Pogued, i wasn't aware it was an U-23 tournament
I would imagine the starting 11 will be made up mainly of young English players with a token Welsh, Scottish and NIreland player just to keep everyone happy.

The SFA, FA of Wales and IFA are perfectly right to object to this . This could be the start of the process that will spell the end of Scotland, Wales and NIreland
fielding seperate sides

Should have read, "Scotland, Wales, N.I. and ENGLAND fielding separate sides"

Will the Anglos give up the beloved FA so easily?

If that ever did happen then I think you'd find that players from all sorts of backgrounds - not just Nationalist lads - born in the North would throw the or hat in with the ROI team. in fact if a GB team came into existence it could lead to a United Ireland soccer team. It would be the only way players from the North would get a game in international soccer.

Actually I'm beginning to warm to the idea of a GB soccer team. Maybe Nigel secretly wants a United Ireland soccer team

Congrats! You've got it in one!

They're scraping the traditional wolfhound and offering dull Nige the position of donkey mascot to the new All Ireland team in recognitioon of services rendered. Those services being: a] The complete mismanagement, dumbing down and final destruction of the NI team; b] Talking up the UK team concept.

Word has old Blatter has also promised NW some lifetime job at FIFA in charge of the new "Positives Dept" if he can secure the demise of the NI team while bringing about the formation of the new UK team.
