I'm deciding to not post a team on the grounds that it'll be rediculously biased in Wales' favour.

i think shane williams and johnny wilkinson are massively overrated to be honest.

id have jonathon davies at fly half and robinson on the wing.

The latter deft in attack, powerful in defence, great with the boot too an dwith the belief to make his side unbeatable

really ? i remember guscott as being a beautiful runner with great hands, but i dont remember his kicking (apart from the drop goal against SA), and certainly not his tackling ?

i think shaun fitzpatrick might have something to say regarding your comments on wood (although of course he couldnt play for the lions).

i'd want an out and out open side as well, so would stick either Back or martyn williams in there.

is tom smith really the best prop in the last 50 years ? and (although they were before my time) would gordon brown compete against mcbride for a place alongside johnson ?

Good article though

As you can probably tell, I am young and Welsh... But all those players at their peak were sensational and were consistently brilliant for years and I think they deserve it.

Captain H

Even with youth as an excuse won't they take you outside and shoot you for not having JJ and / or JPR in there? I would have thought that was worse blasphemy than John Redmond's "singing" the Welsh anthem

JPB
On Guscott, the drop goal is the best example of his kicking but, for a centre, his kicking from hand always seemed very impressive and opened up an angle of attack that very few sides have

I'd tend to consider Fitzpatrick as being before the professional era as he retired in 1997, also which Robinson do you mean for the wing slot?

The choice of McBride, Johnson or Brown is a good one, I'd tend to lean towards the first two just by the authority they had for example

Lions have won the 74 series in South Africa, younger players (I think Brown and Fran Cotton were involved) went a bit wild in the hotel, set of the fire extinguishers and then had a massive fire in the ballroom. Owner threatens to get the police, Cotton dashes up to McBride's room to explain, McBride approaches manager and cool as ice enquires "You're going to get the police? Will there be many of them?"

On Martin Johnson, England away in Australia, scrum reduced to 6 men sets down to face the Aussie pack, Martin Bayfield asks "What are we going to do?" Johnson replies "Just ****ing push", England scrum drives Australia back, game won psychologically

Thats why I'd go for the first two, on the prop, yeah, unlike the other ones their didn't seem to be an absolute stand out there, though thats a bit hard on Tom Smith

i hadnt heard that one.

on the wing, i meant jason robinson. ive never seen anyone who can change direction so quickly or accelerate over the first 5 yards like him. also read the game very well.

SARS : I wanted to stick to just players I have seen play, and unfortunately i was never lucky enough to see them play!

Try convincing the Scrum V jury of that, you chose an Englishman over JPR - you're a brave man!

truoble is hook, only one of the players in your team have won a test series for the lions.

in fact at a guess i'd say their average lions test result would be about 1 and 5.

posted on 4/4/12

It is littered with serial grand slam winners, with a sprinkling of World Cup winners, Heiniken Cup winners, world player of the years, Lions player of series etc

posted on 4/4/12

and players who have lost every lions series they've played in.

but together any team would struggle to beat them. and this is a 'fantasy lions team' is it not

posted on 4/4/12

it is. but you cant just put yourself in and say, 'ah, but in this fantasy im going to be awesome'. these guys all lost on lions tours. there's plenty of players out there who are used to winning on them.

God knows how one is supposed to compare players spanning nearly 40 years of watching rugby.
How, for example, would Willie John do nowadays? Well, at just over 6'3" he'd have to play at 6 and even then he'd be crucified.
I guess it'll have to be based on what they were in their own time.
My selection will, of course have an Irish bias as that's what I know most about and as the memories get fuzzy I'll choose a lot of my favourite players, even though many will argue they were not the best.

So, here goes.

JPR
JJ
BOD
Mike Gibson
Wee Shane
Tony Ward
Gareth Edwards
Graham Price
Fergus Slattery
Richard Hill
Willie John
Moss Keane
Adam Jones
Fester
Tom Smith

I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with that, but I have only spent the last week deliberating. May well change once I remember someone else, or my opinion changes.

looks like a pretty handy team mondieu.

Probably not but, one of my favourite players and tough as old hobnails.
I remember one game against France which was not for the squeamish. Pierre Dospital, a real thug of a prop in the best French tradition, had been up to no good throughout. A large messy ruck developed, Moss dived onto the top of it and came out clutching Dospital's ear which was still attatched to his head, but only just.

Interesting idea MonDieu but not sure many of them qualify to represent The Lions...

i think he's put it on the wrong thread.

there's another one which is supposed to be best of the last 10 years, but which has also got a couple of all time teams on.
