What Nalbandian should do

I just had a look at my Boodles ticket, and it's got 8 players there, guess who's one of them, ahem, ahem.....

Now THAT is going to be very interesting!

I think the nicest gesture would've been for that line judge (rather than show off his bruise and make the final all about him) to actually think about the people in the crowd, cover himself up and urge the match to continue, even if he couldn't.

That would've been a nice gesture.

I wonder if you'll practice what you preach when some idiot causes you physical injury some day.

A great article on Haas, Fed and Nalby:

http://blogs.tennis.com/thewrap/2012/06/not-going-gently.html

Particularly like the last paragraph on Nalbandian:

"Nalbandian can be surly, but he can also seem shy. He’ll never win the tour’s sportsmanship award, or the media’s man of the year, and his name is virtually synonymous with “underachiever” among tennis fans. At the same time, though, I’ll always remember him consoling his losing teammate Jose Acasuso after the latter's decisive, and crushing, defeat to Russia in the Davis Cup final in 2006—that seems a long time ago right now. The default and fine this time were certainly warranted, and a suspension for bloodying an official, even accidentally, would be as well.

A few minutes before his infamous kick, Nalbandian bounced his racquet and watched as it flew toward the fence—trouble was brewing. What struck me most about the kick itself was Nalbandian’s total obliviousness to the person sitting an inch behind the box. In his rage, he hit the first thing he saw, and then watched as it flew apart and a guy hobbled away. It would be one thing if a young hothead had done this, but you would think a veteran would have a little more self-control. Or, at the very least, you'd think that he would realize that when he sees a line judge’s box, there’s probably going to be a line judge inside of it.

A shame, unfortunate, ugly, unsportsmanlike, out of control—you could say all of these things about Nalbandian’s Great Box Massacre of 2012, but only one word really fits: Stupid."

It's not unusual for someone to lose control in sports, thats one of the reasons the rules are there to try and prevent people from going to far, but it's really not hard once you've transgressed to genuinely apologise.

A couple of times in football, teams have actually refunded fans money for matches they've travelled to where the team have been really dire.

I think Nalbandian could do himself and the sport a whole lot of good PR by a decent gesture to the linesman and attendees somehow.

Might also be good for his peace of mind, would be a shame to see him get a bad reaction from a Wimbledon crowd.

Nalbandian generally strikes me as a frustrated clown.

Frustated in a similar way as Tipsarevic: some who showed a lot of promise but failed to deliver.

Unfortunately on that tennis court it's hard to strike a balance when you know you 've got the talent but can't quite pull it off for whatever reason.

With that inflated person bubbling inside the body which loses more than it wins, things have to boil over now and then.

The clown bit is just how he plays down his underachieving: walks around like a goof a bit, dramatises line calls , slow to challenge...yes that court is unforgiving and bares ALL!

I hope he swallows the stupidity of what he did, takes it on the chin and does not allow it to wreck what's left of his career.

I am with you JT to some extend. Nalby's kick was maybe stupid but above all simply impulsive. It's not good to be that impulsive but the intent was not to harm anyone. And that only stupid people looking for "someone nastier than Me" would actually try to get a huge blame on Nalby. It reminds me those alcoholic and 4 wheel drivers point to the poor smoker as the worst evil on the planet.

However the line judge reaction is a calculated one. Trying to make the most of his little adventure by going to the police and media trying to cash in....out of a stupid incident on court.

I have much less time for those kind of people.

Where exactly has he gone running off to the media or police?

Just because the police are investigating an incident that is there for all to see doesn't mean it was the linesman who through no fault of his own suffered a rather nasty injury.

I hardly think he sees it as an adventure.

"A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault."

I'd say 99% chance it's the line judge otherwise they woudl have dismissed the case straight away.

100% agree, that was my point.

Nalby was very silly and apologised, the linesman was injured (I understand his initial reaction), but once Nalby apologised and the line judge cooled down, rather than flaunting his scar for the world to see, he should've realised the paying public were enjoying a very good match.

But he was too busy living in this world we live in of people shaking their heads "I would never do THAT!!!". Having a pop at others mindset just to feel better about themselves. Pathetic.

I do think Nalby should've lost the second set as punishment as well as a hefty fine though.

That's not how it works in Britain, anyone can make a complaint, happens regularly at football matches here.

The Daily Telegraph reports that it was linesman Andrew McDougall who made an official assault complaint to Scotland Yard against David Nalbandian, who injured McDougall by kicking a wooden board into his leg during the Queen's Club final. The Telegraph also said that Wimbledon officials decided not to have McDougall work Wimbledon qualifying matches this week "presumably out of concern for the ongoing publicity surrounding the case, and he left the site early."

UN should also note this type of behaviour and ensure the Falklands are permanently protected from
It.

Is that from you Jonty? So not far fetched!
