They definitely do not deserve to be number 1 in ODIs. In tests, yes. ODIs, never.
So 1 year playing well in ODI compared to how many years of playing Pathetic?
Do it for at least 2-3 years and then maybe they shoul be no1.
it's been a long time since england has been a good one day side, and it's been good to see them performing more consistently lately.
we were unlcuky not to win the world cup in 87 and in 92, but have generally been poor since around that time.
maybe this ranking system in test cricket has some merit, but in one days, the real prize should always be that world cup.
JPB, how were you unlucky in 92?
87 yeah that Gatting sweep changed the game.
92 we were unlucky because we had bowled pakistan out for 72 in the first round. if pakistan lost they were out. we were something like 50-1 when a thunderstorm hit and the game was cancelled, allowing pakistan through to the next round.
Thats true for Pakistan in terms of luck but England had there fare share against South Africa in the semi. After we had the luck we turned up when it mattered in semi and final.
the final could have gone either way tbh.
244 in those days was a good total but yeah it still needed some brilliance from Akram to change the game.
pakistan won the final fair and square, but in relation to my original point, i think it's fair to say that england are a bit unlucky not to have won a rold cup, bearing in mind gatting's reverse sweep and the rain coming in that first round match in 92. whether that is true or not though, england were certainly more competitive in those world cups than they have been since.
I think we are the best T20 team but not 50 overs. I still feel there is something missing.
At this moment in time, England deserve that spot full stop. Only, RSA can consider themselves better, but they are not all that in ODI's. Their bowlers get smashed around like no-ones business.
Lets just laugh at Australia, 4th in the ODI rankings and 9th in the T20 rankings, two places below Bangladesh!
boss, its not just last 1 year. Its been after the world cup i think. no team right now have been as consistent like england have. credit where its due.
kash yes its official
yh maksi. england are no.1 in both tests and odis. and no.2 in t20. Though this rankings could change if you lose to SA in tests and odis. and also eng have a chance to get back to no.1 in t20s, if they beat SA.
jpb I agree that in odis the pinnacle is WC, but u hv to agree the wc doesnt tell the full story. many people say would India have won if the wc was in australia or england? So I think that is why rankings help
Australia aren't that bad, we lost 4-0 to England in a 5 match series. Last time England played in Aus they lost 6-1 in a 7 match series. England have also lost 5-0 to India in recent memory, conditions seem to have a bigger impact on the results than any differences in skill between the teams.
I remember us stuffing you dunc The other matches are beginning to be a long time ago.
Just think, we lead the way in everything
NURSE!!! NURSE!!! HE GOT OUT AGAIN!!
"NURSE!!! NURSE!!! HE GOT OUT AGAIN!!"
Australian's have a sense of humour after all!
Dunc doesn't know how close to the truth that is
Too much artillery fire me thinks pmsl but what can man do ?
I was surprised to hear that we were nr 1 in ODIs. It wasn't that long ago we could even play the game.
Cricket is in a good place these days. Everybody has a chance of winning something, even Australia lol
Australia are doing very well in the Olympics, Duncan, you must be proud.
It's ok, I am born and bred in Scotland
We have just won more than ten of these matches in a row bud, against some good opposition. That said, this was a surprise to me too given we were pretty poor at this format not so long ago.
