Largely agree with those comments Yorkie but I wouldn't factor KP into the picture yet. I wonder whether Strauss would perform better without the burden of captaincy!

Glad that England went down with a bang not a whimper though.

Your team shows minimal changes from the 3rd test and that is the way it should be. Taylor and Bairstow are the future and now know what it is like to lose a series. Cook, Bell & Trott should bounce back.

Overall what is needed is a change of mindset. Especially during the Pakistan tour there was no reason to panic, etc. Even though we were being consistently outplayed.

During the long period when Aus were on top they never slackened their pace. And that is why they stayed on top for so long. England have to get back to treating every game as a "must win" and treating every team with respect.

Agree with most of that Neon bar Strauss. Though, as I said he leaves on his terms. Taylor will be immense. I put Thakor in there for you pal!

Roll on the winter tour to a certain sub cobtinent country...

It was widely documented after the debacle against WI in 2008 or 2009 that the team had a frank heart to heart, and started afresh in the wake of the Moores/KP fall out and all the changing room tension.

Clearly something similar has to happen now. KP must be a part of team England, but he must buy into the team ethos. Equally he must be respected by his team mates. If he sees the 'banter' aimed at him as bullying, then it is bullying. The forming of cliques must also be challenged.

We have the make up of a good side. I would like to see a pretty much unchanged side for India. If we go with 6 batsmen then Bairstow has obviously earned himself another go.

That is a good point Neon - KP's knowledge of India would be vital.

Nit sure what those texts said but agreed with Hamza - Need to start afresh.

did anyone else notice strauss's comment after the game that the batting "cupboard was full" ? i wondered if that was suggesting that there was no room for KP.

unless england lose all the games in india, i can see strauss still as captain next summer unless he doesnt score a run all winter.

Well balanced article Yorkie. Hit the nail on the head with most things.

The KP issue aside for the moment (who knows if he'll return for India or at all) the biggest problem going forward is Strauss, as you elude to he's a walking wicket. I was actually going to do an article on him and his place in the side because this isn't a blip IMO this is a batsman in decline.

I had a quick look at his statistics the other day dating back over the past 2 years dating back to August 2010 and they read thus -

24 matches for 1273 runs at 32.64 including 3 hundreds.

Paltry and beyond worrying. He's been carried mostly by the exploits of those around him but against top notch attacks when the rest of the batting faulters (another problem) Strauss' woes become all the more glaring.

People will point to his recent returns v WI and say well he's scored hundreds what's the problem. They weren't easy runs by any means but nor was he overly examined, good bowlers for a while have had his number and I don't see it improving.

The Philander dismissal yesterday for instance. He looked all at sea, admittedly it was a good spell but I don't buy into this idea of 'the dismissal of a man with a scrambled mind at the moment'. To me it was the dismissal of a man who is losing his eye and his reflexes as his career winds down, sadly. It happens to everyone.

Worse still there doesn't seem a hint to be a hint of at the least a resignation of the captaincy. If as you say he can walk when he wants then a few opening bowlers will be licking their lips, dare I say a few Australians in 12 months?

Obviously replacements are an issue, Root is a good prospect and I'd be tempted to prepare him for the Ashes (can anyone currently do worse than Strauss?). For now I'd rather Trott opened, promote Bell to 3 and hope KP returns to the fold. Can't see it mind.

Sorry for the length of the reply.

when ready, bopara should come back and replace taylor and be given a fair crack at test level and if it doesn't work out then taylor is there.

don't see why JPB thinks Tremlett should be back. His career is over and the likes of Meaker, Woakes, Onions etc are miles ahead of him.

By the way, one seamer for the future is Reece Topley. How good does he look for the U19's.

Neon,

As we all know time doesn't stand still for anyone in this game and there's no room for sentiment. Strauss did a good job in getting this England side to number 1 although he contributed little with the bat in that time. His average is on the slide and another year could see it drop below 40 which wouldn't befit someone of his ability in his prime. We'll see.

JPB,

For me if you're good enough your old enough and Root has shown his credentials. He's nearly 22 and of course he still has a bit to learn but Test cricket brings out another level in some cricketers. The option is certainly there.

It would be a real shame if tremlett's career is "over" pakking.

he is a devastating bowler when fit.

what makes you think he cant come back ?

do you know what the latest situation is ? i understand he made a comeback this summer but hasnt palyed again for a month now.

Galloping - cheers. interesting

Btw, regarding these team selections, i reckon something that this series showed us is that against the top teams we are a bowler short.

i'd bite the bullet and go back to 5 bowlers personally, with prior at 6 and posssibly woakes at 7, as per my suggested team above

Take a bow Pakking. Topley is an outstanding prisoect. Should be in the Liobs team now.

Regarding Root and when he us ready... Who knows? Cook was thrown in at 21. Broad was a young lad. Others on the other hand cone in aged 25 or 26.

Personally, it is this season Root has pushed on, but this is in the second division. He has performed very well in all formats and has the same average as Bairstow in the CC 53. He has the temperament, attitude and well educated in the Lions to handle the step up.

He is also a very good fielder and decent part time spinner.
