key, you don't mean fat key from kent do you?
No chance for Rob Key.
It is a bit bare in the openers department.
It will be one of the following
Compton
Carberry
Root
Patel
Morgan
Bopara
Personally, only keen on either Compton or Root.
I would leave Taylor and Bairstow at 5 and 6. Move Bell to open with Cook and lets hope KP returns at 4.

Trott who has been used to coming in early after Strauss should open with Bell at 3.

Yep, I'm another one who hopes to see this.
Bell could quite easily cope with opening, is already used to opening with Cook (albeit in a different form of the game) and I'd rather leave Trott at 3.
KP, Taylor, Bairstow, Bopara, Morgan competing for the other 3 slots.
Like for like replacements I would say is limited to Joe Root, Nick Compton, Michael Carberry or Varun Chopra.
Anyone know where you can (easily) view the 2012 averages of English openers?
root or trott.
id love to see root bat, but id be tempted to play 5 batters, prior at 6 and woakes at 7.
that would mean trott opening.
"Bare" in the openers department? What rubbish.
Aside from my fave Root there are the claims of Hales, Hildreth Compton Carbery....loads of openers
Why ON EARTH would we want to pick the likes of Patel, Morgan or Bopara? None of these are regular openers. And Key has blown hs chances now
Patel, Morgan or Bopara? They can't bat lower down the order let alone opening against a shiny cherry.
I presume those candidates involved shifting Trott or Bell up to open...
Short term Trott, long term Root
Dr do you follow county cricket? Carberry is very injury prone. Hales, who is an exciting youngster is only just getting into form not pkaying for the Lions. Hildreth is decent middle order but similar to Gale went iff the boil after captaining the Lions.
Regarding some of those mentioned in my previous list - Patel and Morgan, I included on the they are not openers but others could be moved to open to include them in the team. I personally wouldn't play either of them.
Carberry is hardly injury prone, yes he had the blood clot in his lung, but that's cleared up now. He's just had a knee injury which is the first actual injury he's had in a while.
What is worrying is that we are asking County batsmen to open for England who bat middle order for their County side based... For example Compton or Hildreth.
Big difference between Taunton batting first down against Dernbach and opening the batting against Zaheer Khan in Indian conditions and atmosphere.
How many games gas he played last 2 seasons? Not knocking what you said, am curious. He is decent but I seem to feel very injury prone.

I am watching the Diamond League meet in Zurich. No Indians doing well there either.
Apart from playing cricket badly, whatcha got?
Patel, Morgan or Bopara
=====================
JPB, England got narrowly beaten by a very good cricket team. The last 2 tests were in our hands and the first one went in that crazy second and third day. I don't see no panic, do you?
I am sensing exciting times because we have a couple of young guns who look very promising to me.
As usual I dont have a clue what Neon is talking about.
We play 12 ODIs and we lost one of them and he thinks we are finished
India
I think if england are clever enough, I would pick trott for opening. He is kind of an opener anyway. most of the times England have always lost openers very quickly. and then bell 3rd, who enjoyed batting at 3rd against India when trott was injured.
England will have to work out who to put in place for bell at 5. And that hopefully should be fairly simple.
