actually swap simon jones for darren gough

England team looks good, might be tempted to stick Caddick in there, Broad probably misses out in that case. Darren Gough is a good shout.

Wouldn't make any changes to the world team.

i know laxman only averaged mid 40's but i could watch him bat for hours and he played the greatest innings ive ever seen vs australia 281

i'd put steve waugh in as my first pick of any player in the last 25 years.

so many great players though, and i like my world team a fair bit better than my england team !

One of my favourite england cricketers towards the end of his career was craig white. for a brief period when england had a lower middle order of stewart, flintoff, white they were very strong. cant justify putting him in though. botham also just misses out due to me catching him right at the end of the first half of his career from which point he went from being the best player in the world to very mediocre.

No batting attack could really be expected to withstand marshall ambrose hadlee and warne, but i think robin smith would be england's best hope at 3 against the pace attack. gower is included more in hope than expectation. i have picked england's bowlers based on their peak form, and on the assmuption that they are young and injury free.

tendulkar, muralitheran, wasim and mcgrath can obviously consider themselves unlucky to miss out on the world x1, and miandad, de silva, healy and various others would have been more than capable deputies as well. i have included azhurrudin more for the spectator than anything else, as i think he was a beautiful player to watch.

Amla's a very good shout btw. Yousef Yohana/Mohammed Yousef would also be a very strong contender for the world side.

out of the england players, i'd say that thorpe, flintoff, harmison and jones would be 2nd/3rd team for the world side.

vaughan, gooch, gower, pietersen, stewart, prior and (1986/7) botham would be 3rd/4th team.

an early vintage botham would of course be in the world 1st x1.

as a final comment, i'd say that the world 4th team above, is getting close to something that the england 1st team might be able to give a game.

ive got yousef in twice. i forgot alan border, so he can replace him in the 3rd team.

I seem to be a bit older than many on this thread, having started watching cricket in the early to mid 1970s.
My England team from that period would be:

Gooch
Boycott
Gower
Pietersen
Thorpe
Greig T. (c)
Botham
Knott (wk)
Gough
Underwood
Willis

My world XI for the same time period would be:

Richards B.
Gavaskar
Richards V.
Tendulkar
Chappell G.
Kallis
Imran Khan (c)
Gilchrist (wk)
Hadlee
Marshall
Warne
