New research indicates that some stained glass windows from Canterbury Cathedral may be among the oldest in the world.

The panels, depicting the Ancestors of Christ, have been re-dated using a new, non-destructive technique.

The analysis indicates that some of them may date back to the mid-1100s.

The windows would therefore have been in place when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, was killed at the cathedral in 1170.

Léonie Seliger, the head of stained glass conservation at the cathedral, and part of the research team, told BBC News that the discovery was historically "hugely significant".

"We have hardly anything left of the artistic legacy of that early building [apart from] a few bits of stone carving. But until now, we didn't think we had any stained glass. And it turns out that we do," she said.

Former Rangers and Scotland defender Ally Dawson has died aged 63 after a long illness, his family have said.

Dawson, capped five times by his country, spent 12 years at Ibrox before joining Blackburn in 1987. He also featured for Limerick and Airdrie.

After playing for and managing Maltese side St Andrews, he managed Hamilton Academical and won the Third Division title in 2001.

Rangers said they were "extremely saddened" to hear of Dawson's passing.

The full-back captained the Ibrox side and won six domestic cups. His international appearances came in the early 1980s.

A statement from Dawson's family said: "We will remember the impact he had on our family with affection, inspired by the courage with which he fought his illness and the way he lived his life and grateful that Ally spent his final days with those he loved and who loved him."

Swimmer Tom Dean sensationally clinched Britain's fourth gold of the Tokyo Games on day four of the Olympics, six months after he contracted Covid for a second time.

The 21-year-old, who struggled to walk up stairs after contracting the virus, edged out compatriot Duncan Scott by 0.04secs in the 200m freestyle.

Elsewhere, Georgia Taylor-Brown fought back from a puncture on the last lap of the bike leg to take triathlon silver.

The Briton was 22 seconds off the four-strong leading pack going into the run.

But she reeled in all her rivals except for Bermuda's Flora Duffy to claim an emotional second-place finish.

It is Britain's second triathlon silver after Alex Yee's success on Monday.

Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles has been pulled out of the team final because of a 'mental issue' after just one event following a shock error on vault that resulted in her lowest score in years - days after she spoke out about her struggle to deal with the pressure of the Olympics.

The 24-year-old - who had been expected to lead the US to gold in the team event - was withdrawn from the lineup after flubbing her vault in the opening minutes of the team final competition in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Shortly after the dramatic error, Simone left the stadium with her trainer and was closely followed by medical staff - sparking fears that she had sustained a serious injury.

Ange Postecoglou says Leigh Griffiths can "win back" the Celtic fans after being booed by some of them during Saturday's defeat by West Ham United.

The striker, 30, is out of Celtic's Champions League qualifier second leg against Midtjylland with a "slight injury", manager Postecoglou said.

Griffiths was cleared of criminality this month over alleged inappropriate texts to an underage girl.

"Leigh is in the same position as all of us," Postecoglou added.

"We represent the football club. The supporters are there to judge us on how we perform and what we do. We have to accept the response we get.

"For the most part Leigh has still got a positive response from the crowd because they acknowledge the fact he has had an incredible career at Celtic.

"If there are people that express dissatisfaction then it's up to him to show with his performances and the way he goes about things. I'm sure he can win them back very quickly."

Super Bowl XLVIII was an American football game between the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Denver Broncos and National Football Conference (NFC) champion Seattle Seahawks to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2013 season. The Seahawks defeated the Broncos 43–8, the largest margin of victory for an underdog and tied for the third largest point differential overall (35) in Super Bowl history with Super Bowl XXVII (1993).

It was the first time the winning team scored over 40 points while holding their opponent to under 10. This became the first Super Bowl victory for the Seahawks and the fifth Super Bowl loss for the Broncos, at the time a league record (it would later be tied by the New England Patriots following their Super Bowl LII loss) for the most of any team.

The UK economy will grow faster than expected this year as it recovers from the Covid pandemic, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

Economic prospects for rich and poor nations have diverged more due to differing access to Covid vaccines, it said.

In a new assessment, the IMF said the world is increasingly split into two blocs.

It has upgraded growth forecasts for developed economies.

But the outlook for many developing countries has weakened.

Among the forecast revisions for this year, the largest upgrade is for the UK to 7%.

Britain is also now predicted to have the joint fastest growth of the G7 leading rich countries, together with the US, although that follows a contraction last year that was the deepest in that group.

The UK's Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, welcomed what he called "the positive signs that the economy is rebounding faster than previously expected".
