A minute's silence will be held at games in Brazil's top flight in tribute to a fan who died after she was hit by a glass bottle outside a stadium.

Palmeiras fan Gabriela Anelli, 23, was queuing outside Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo on Saturday when a bottle was thrown during a brawl between Palmeiras and Flamengo fans.

She suffered a cut to the neck and died in hospital two days later.

"Thanks to everyone who prayed for my sister," her brother said.

"She went to live with God in heaven," Felipe Anelli added on Instagram.

Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), said he was working with the federal government and other relevant bodies to stop "criminal and sad episodes like this from happening again".

A minute's silence will be observed at all games in the 15th round of the Brazilian championship in honour of Anelli, Rodrigues announced.

"Football is passion and not a space for the action of criminals infiltrating the fans to practise all kinds of violence," he said.

During the clash, police were also attacked with glass bottles and used pepper spray to try to restore order.

The spray seeped into the stadium and the referee had to stop the match twice in the first half due to the players feeling irritation in their eyes and nose.

Arsenal's Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus was among those to pay tribute to Anelli, calling the incident "a sad day for Brazilian football".

"Gabi was only 23 years old and had a whole life ahead of her, which ended up being taken away by the violence in the stadiums," Jesus tweeted "May we reflect and unite for the end of this violence. And may God comfort Gabi's family..."

Larne lost 1-0 away to HJK Helsinki after conceding a penalty just over a minute into their Champions League debut.

Bojan Radulovic scored from the spot-kick twice, after his first attempt had to be retaken, to win the first leg of the first-round qualifier for the Finns.

Larne recovered from going behind so early on and came close to equalising twice through Leroy Millar in what was an impressive second-half display.

The second leg will be played in Belfast next week.

It will be played at Solitude, home of Cliftonville, after Larne's artificial pitch at their Inver Park base failed to meet the required Champions League standards.

Having qualified for Europe's premier competition by winning the Irish Premiership for the first time in their 134-year history last season, Tiernan Lynch's men produced a well-drilled and creative performance after the break.

They had an excellent chance to equalise on the hour-mark when Lee Bonis won a free-kick just wide of the area. Dylan Sloan delivered a curling free-kick and Millar had a free header at the back post but guided his effort wide.

Millar, last season's Player of the Year in Northern Ireland, had another chance to level on 77 minutes, with Sloan again the architect as he cut the ball back cleverly to the edge of the box, but Millar could not keep his shot down under pressure from a defender.

The New Saints were made to pay for a terrible start in Sweden after losing 3-1 to BK Hacken in their Champions League qualifier.

Saints recovered from conceding two goals inside the opening 12 minutes of this first leg in Gothenburg.

Striker Declan McManus salvaged a goal only for the Swedish champions to strike a third before half-time.

However a series of Conor Roberts saves offered Saints a glimmer of hope ahead of the return match next Tuesday.

Manager Craig Harrison knew his team had been handed a "really, really tough" draw having admitted his surprise that the Swedish league winner were unseeded for the Champions League.

Other than an injury to Adam Wilson, TNS were at full strength for this first leg at Hisingen Arena in Sweden's second city.

Hosts Hacken, third in Sweden's top-flight Allsvenskan, were without Benie Traore who had been allowed to travel to hold talks with Premier League-bound Sheffield United.

The union representing Hollywood actors said Thursday that talks with studios to avert a major industry shutdown had ended without a deal, paving the way for a vote on the first actors strike in more than four decades. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), which represents 160,000 performers, said last-ditch talks had failed to resolve their demands over dwindling pay and the threat posed by artificial intelligence. Now stars including Meryl Streep, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Stiller. Remi Malek and Quinta Brunson could all strike.

The Acropolis in the Greek capital Athens has been closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect visitors from an intense heatwave gripping the country.

Tourists have been barred from entering the country's most popular attraction from 12:00 to 17:00 (9:00-14:00 GMT).

Athens is sweltering in temperatures of 40C (104F) or more.

Much of southern Europe is experiencing extreme heat with potentially record temperatures expected next week.

There are also fears in Greece of a greater risk of wildfires, especially in areas with high winds. It suffered major wildfires in 2021 in another exceptional heatwave.

In Croatia, fires broke out on Thursday, burning houses and cars in at least one village, Grebastica, on the Dalmatian coast. Officials told Croatian TV on Friday morning that the fire had been brought under control.

Earlier this week, a man in his forties died from the heat after collapsing in northern Italy - while several visitors to the country have collapsed from heatstroke, including a British man outside the Colosseum in Rome.

The cause is the Cerberus heatwave - named by the Italian Meteorological Society after the three-headed monster that features in Dante's Inferno.

posted on 14/7/23

It was expected to peak on Friday but Italian weather forecasters are warning that the next heatwave - dubbed Charon after the ferryman who delivered souls into the underworld in Greek mythology - will push temperatures back up above 40C next week.

Heatwaves are also being seen in parts of the US, China, North Africa and Japan.

A top court in Rome has ruled that a culling order for two bears in northern Italy should be suspended, backing an appeal by animal rights activists.

One of the bears, a 17-year-old female called JJ4, was captured after it killed jogger Andrea Papi in the Alps.

The other, known as MJ5, had attacked a hiker in the same area weeks earlier.

Italy's Council of State said the slaughter ruling "appears disproportionate and inconsistent with supranational and national rules".

The case will now be referred back to a local court for a final appeal by the end of the year.

When JJ4 was captured in April the governor of Trentino province, Maurizio Fugatti, said "we would have liked to kill the bear on the spot".

Mr Papi, 26, was the first Italian known to have been killed by a bear for years. He had been jogging on the slopes of Mt Peller above the town of Caldes when he was attacked.

JJ4 was taken to an animal care centre near the city of Trento but to this day MJ5, a male bear who attacked a 39-year-old hiker in March, continues to roam free in the Brenta Dolomites mountain range.

However, both bears faced a slaughter order and their case was taken up by animal welfare groups who said the animals were a protected species in Italy.

Luton Town's first home game back in the top flight has been postponed after the club could not assure the Premier League and opponents Burnley that improvement works at Kenilworth Road would be completed in time.

Work is being carried out to meet Premier League standards following promotion from the Championship.

It means the Saturday, 19 August fixture will have to be rearranged.

"All parties felt this was a sensible outcome," Luton said.

The £10m work programme includes the construction of a new stand to meet broadcast and media requirements.

"Luton Town FC were unable to offer the League and Burnley FC a guarantee that ongoing work to Kenilworth Road would not impact the scheduling of this match at late notice for supporters," the Premier League stated.

Luton won promotion back into the top division for the first time since 1992 when they won the Championship play-off final in May.

The Hatters have plans to move to a new stadium by 2026, but they have needed to update Kenilworth Road to meet Premier League requirements.
