did India underestimate England?

I don't believe India underestimated England, more likely they overestimated themselves and fell into the trap that many have in believing SA are a stronger team than England, so one warm up game would be enough.

One warm up game would have been fine if the whole squad had played in the west indies - to many players weren't ready to play in such a big test - Zaheer looked under prepared, unfit and now injured very poor player management from the indian management.

Having said that absolutely brilliant performance by England, great test wicket at lords, packed house all week - I wouldnt expect India to perform poorly again this summer, but England were fantastic and will be flying now should be a great series

It isnt underestimating when you get your early tour schedule wrong - England always messed up their preperations for the Ashes in Australia - that wasnt due to underestimation.

If the warm up or lack of it is to blame for the defeat - it is bad management or schedule pressure.

As neon say above - they normally have the same preparation for a tour

No, probably overestimated themselves if truth be told........

Whilst the players and team management didnt underestimate england, its clear that indian fans did... you only have to read some of the comments on here and the bbc 606 prior to this test/series to evidence that....

Neon, fair point I suppose. But I also have indian friends and colleagues who thought exactly the same.... "we are india, number1 side in the world, sachin, best batting line up blah blah blah and we'll see to the english"...... that kind of attitude has been/ and still is widespread......

One of England's strengths is they never under estimate any opponent and It's unlikely that India will underestimate England for the remainder of this series. Could be a real cracker especially when Sehwag and Zaheer are fit.

the important thing is the Team doesent think lie that...
There is a difference between confidence and arrogance.

Neon, put the game into context mate and the facts and figures our there for all to see.......
Those players that played well for india against england we're the likes of dravid, sharma, raina to name three.... what do they all have in common - they played in the west indies....... but the so called big boys, sachin and zaheer and the like went missing thinking they could turn up and play england without any kind of practise.......... arrogance or confidence from the indian team selectors that picked the sqauds for the windies???

Well the new tune from my Indian friends and family is that the "Mother of the flat track bullies" Virinder Shewag will make the difference batting wise and along with the unplayable Sreesanth Englands batting will look poor.

The real problem is that fans from a certain country cant take and accept defeat..... always have to have some excuse, they've got them lined up one by one...... players getting injured is part and parcel of the game. Deal with it!! England have sufferred injuries over the years to big name players..... never used that as an excuse though...... 1.2 billion people, and they rely on just 11 first team players and have been doing for the past 10 years...... seriously, some of you boys need to drink stronger coffee in the morning!!!!

Afridi 1.2 Billion? You might wanna do a re-count after yesterdays loss.

Neon accidents do happen but luckily no one died but to sacrifise your life cos Sachin did not score a ton in another big game is a bit extreme.

Also you talk about shame by Pak cricket which is true recently but dont be so short sighted that India have been the perfect role model as there list of cricket crime is on a never ending sheet.

when watching the highlights last night both me & my friend heads turned & looked at each other in disbelief as we saw hundreds if not thousands of fans going absolutely bonkers & screaming their heads off as Tendulker walked past... I just don't get it.

What about Beatle mania etc. in England and the hero worship of soccer players.

I don't think even Beckham is worshipped like Tendulkar is.
And lets be honest, a lot of pop stars etc are adored by young girls.

Beckam has been mobbed around the world ginge - i may not watch that evil game but i watch the news - I dont think anyone that follows soccer can really knock the Indians worship of their cricket team

Indian cricket team seems to be in the habit of starting most test series with a defeat.

England team generally gives itself more time to settle down with warm-up matches when touring.

In 2007, India escaped defeat at Lord's (rain) in the first, but won at Trent Bridge. I doubt India can win the next test of the current series without Khan.
