Race Craft

Considering Hungary is generally a track that we're told is difficult to overtake on I did think that there were a fair few top quality overtakes and not just at turn 1 (thankfully).

I do think that Grosjean was a little unlucky yesterday. His slight bump with Button was nothing more than a racing incident imo and his overtake at T4 which was penalised was again unfortunate. Yes he was outside the confines of the track after an overtake but I bet diamonds that many other drivers went fully over the white lines at T4; they weren't pulled up though as they weren't overtaking. RG was pulled up due to his reputation i feel. On the topic of the thread I feel RG did have a good race - he drove well.

LH had a good race yesterday. He made some critical overtakes which were important to winning the race. I do prefer the winner / leader to have to work a little for the win rather than them just disappearing into the distance only to encounter backmarkers for the duration of the race.

I know he finished 7th but JB always seemed to be flirting with the top 6 throughout the race. He appeared to drive quite well I thought.

SV struggled because he wasn't out in front. I do think this problem is as much to do with the car as it is with him. We constantly heard his race engineer telling him to drop off from the car infront because the car was overheating. I'm sorry but this type of problem is borderline BS. RB know that they have a quick car but are they that arrogant that it is only designed to work in clean air? It's this sort of thing that makes all the aero gizmos way too excessive to me. How can we get closer racing if the cars can't stay close to one another. I know that this is an inherent problem in F1 but after yesterday's race I really think someone should take note and make a regulation change to get rid of a large quantity of the aero devices on the cars. Allow the teams to innovate in other ways that will be beneficial to road cars and stop them from being aero crazy! Sorry, a little off topic but I don't think SV had it in him to carry out critical overtakes yesterday. This showed when he moaned about being cut-up (I think) at T4 when in reality nothing actually happened at all. Maybe he'd have tried harder if FA and KR were in front of him in the championship but he probably knows that barring any major car problems, he'll win this years WDC with a pretty decent points margin.

I'm not a fan of SV but I do think if he had a few more midfield scraps of which he came out on top, people would appreciate his racing a little more.

I thought Lewis was superb yesterday, both overtakes on Webber were brilliant. He did get fortunate that JB managed to hold up Vettel because without that it would have been different. Looking at Lewis' pace though and how quick Rosberg was you have to say that the Merc is not going to compete for the title.
As for Vettel, I think this year has been his best in F1 by far. Yesterday was his worst race this season and again I think he was a little fortunate he didn't either lose his front wing or puncture Buttons tyre in that clumsy incident. He is still young though and still learning, he will improve.

I do have some sympathy for Seb in that his car is abysmal in a straight line so when he came up behind JB he was unable to even get a DRS assisted pass in the first stint and was lucky to come up to JB on the very worn options second time around. He has to have a 7 or 8 out of 10 racecraft, but he isn't up there with Kimi or Alonso who can make a result from nothing.

Lewis is 10 some weeks 6 or 7 others, fortunately the latter is becoming much rarer now his isnt in close proximity with massa on a regular basis. Top job this race!

Martial, no trolls on here. Decent people are trying to engage in debate

Andy but Hamilton, Grosjean, etc didn't need straight line speed to pull off most of their overtakes. Hamilton on Button agreed but the rest had nothing with straight line speed.

Seb made 2 very amateurish moves on button and raikkonen and if he was in the mix more, he would be a lot better in combat.

RedBull won't always lead from the front so he needs a plan B. It's one of the chinks in his armour

"Seb made 2 very amateurish moves on Button and Raikkonen..."

How many times have we heard Martin Brundle ask with that slightly sarcastic ringing tone in his voice when Vettel passes somebody, "What will he be like when he can overtake?"

Well Martin, he will be able to pass at Hungaroring, like Hamilton can.

I thought Niki Lauda made pointed reference to Hamilton's passing ability in the post-race interview.

When I predicted, well before the race, that Lewis Hamilton would get pole and win the race my predictions were met with derision.

Too hot for Mercedes they said.

Well, the result speaks for itself.

In order to win that race Lewis Hamilton had to ….. Well I don't think I need to explain any further to F1 followers. He knew what he had to do and he did it.

I think Vettel crashed into someone.

Vettel ran into Button but didn't get a penalty for causing a collision. Meanwhile Grosjean did

I was one of the many who thought Hamilton had no chance in that heat, think he may have just about proved me wrong there
Was a very impressive drive, no, a extremely impressive weekend!

You do realise that when he makes those comments he's taking this pizz out of people who say he can't overtake, can't race etc ?

Precisely why I added the "slightly sarcastic" bit.
I was being slightly sarcastic.
So why couldn't Vettel overtake in Hungary?
And, what will he be like when he CAN overtake? (No sarcasm intended)

Vettel was the equal of Grosjean in Hungary.

Anytime Vettel has to do some overtaking. He's either crying on the radio for rocky to do something or he crashes into people or makes amateurish maneuvers.

Even the Abu Dhabi race people scream about he had 2 incidents behind a safety car.

The blasting off into the distance will not help him get better at battling other drivers.
