I don't think people are happy with him being 4th choice, it is more of an understanding of Wengers thinking.
Basically, whatever way you slice it, Sagna (until the latter part of the season) was dreadful.
What was even more shocking was such a dip in form, from one of the most consistent performers in the Arsenal ranks. Sagna (for me) has been the best rightback in the Prem for the last few season (apart from last campaign). It's quite possible, that returning from his last injury (legbreak?) had an effect on his conditioning, something at Prem level which can and will be exposed if the player is not at 100%.
Experience-wise Sagna is a real asset and if he can get a decent pre-season under his belt, stay fit and crack on, there's no reason at all he can't have a solid season and once again prove himself to be a real asset.
As to regards to playing at centreback? Well, he's not the tallest, but he can play that role. I remember the game at Sunderland last season, where he ended up playing centrehalf, he was the best player on the pitch.
I actually expected to see Sagna playing for PSG this season (thought it was nailed on), but I'm glad to see him in the red & white still.
After his two broken legs and long lay off he lost some stamina which is hopefully back with training fully over a longer period. Jenko is good back up anyway and could step in, I think he will continue to improve with a run of games as well.
When Sagna played at CB in one game he looked class
Only when Walcott was pushing for striker and never defended did Sagna look dreadful
For the last 3 months or so when he returned from injury he completely kept Jenkinson out of the team and contributed his part to 8 wins in last 10 games
Hopefully with a good pre-season under his belt he can return to his old dependable form.
He has been here for 6 years now, I can't see him signing a new contract, so hopefully he can sign off with some silverware.
I think we're stacked at right back with Sagna, Jenkinson, Bellerin and Koscielny who can play there. Having Sagna as a back up CB makes sense. I did want him to leave while he was still good and not deadwood but I can see the logic of him improving with a good preseason.
Ramsey is also a good fill in right back.
Tbh, it's getting a bit silly if we're relying on Bellerin at any point this season.
I'm not saying he isn't good, but it smacks of the desperation we saw when Wenger threw on Nico Yennaris at the Emirates vs Man Utd.
With our full backs getting forward so much he's gonna need his stamina back. I hope that's all it is and not permanent damage from his broken legs.
Time will tell. I do like Jenkinson a lot, especially after the bad reception he got when he first came on the scene and has answered those critics with good football. This will be his 3rd season at Arsenal. A big one for him I hope.
