Don't like United but agree with this entirely.
Carrick - Gerrard should be our midfield tonight with Henderson - yes I said Henderson - ahead of them as he was been brilliant for us so far this season, and he's massively useful in the more difficult games as he never stops running and will put the Ukraine defence under pressure.
If Hodgepodge starts Barkley that shows how inept he really is - 3 good performances does not an England player make.
I agree but for different reasons to the OP. I'm a massive Carrick fan but the more I think of it, the less I think Carrick can be a success with the England side.
The guy is a confidence player and has spent the past few years with United getting his feet under the table where he's at the point of having unshakable confidence but England get togethers are so rare that he doesn't have the chance to get the same amount of confidence with the national side and that can be seen by his so-so performances with England.
Just one thing about Gerrard and Lampard, it's not the same combo as it was before because instead of playing as a duo in a 4-4-2, now one is playing as the holding midfielder (Gerrard) and one is playing further forward (Lampard) with Wilshire doing the running in a 4-3-3.
I would rather see Barkley, Cleverley, Henderson playing tonight than Lampard. The selection of him with Gerard is a joke. A bad joke we have endured for over a decade now. When there are younger, better players who suit the system required tonight better - Carrick - not being picked it stinks of week management and corruption.
Tonight should be about energy, organisation and getting a result. Not about a 35 year old under achiever who has never offered much to the team - certainly not as a defensive midfielder - getting his 100th cap.
I could never bring myself to say I hope we lose night but if we do we will lose knowing that we didn't pick the best starting eleven for the job. and that type of failure really frustrates.
You put Barkley, Henderson and Cleverley in the side tonight and you lose the game.
Unlike fans who just want the next shiny toy in the team, Roy actually wants to qualify for the world cup and believe it or not, the 3 in midfield tonight are far more likely to get a result than 3 young players who have never played together before and all have massive question marks next to their talents.
Robb. I didn't say pick three young players. I said I would rather see them play than Lampard - who is totally unsuited to tonights game.
You talk about him working well with Gerard tonight but do you actually watch football or do you get your ideas from match of the day and you tube clips?
Lampard played against United a couple of weeks ago in a setup and game that will be very similar to England tonight - backs to the wall, lots of pressure etc.
I would be kind to say he was anonymous , blunt to say he was poor.
The fact is we have a weak manager who is far more interested in keeping the egos happy than picking the best players for the given scenario.
Lampard played against United a couple of weeks ago in a setup and game that will be very similar to England tonight - backs to the wall, lots of pressure etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? And you say I watch MOTD for clips.
Slight difference about the United game and the England game being....
England are actually playing with a striker who can and will hold the ball up bring the likes of Lampard into play as opposed to having no striker to do that as Chelsea had.
Carrick shouldnt retire - but im glad he's not getting picked as it'll benefit United.
England have always had a core of players from United and when push comes to shove despite how our players arer treated on the internantional scene by the FA and fans alike is a joke: (Beckham, Neville(s), Rio, Rooney to name a few.)
We should be proud because England without United players over the years would be the equivalent to Wales (no direspect intended.)
I for one am happy to watch us struggle tonight, which we will and watch the media and fans go into meltdown.
Roy showed with the Rio saga he has no spine whatsoever and that whole 'picking players on form' rather than name was codswallop!
Now who is falling in to lazy cliches.
Chelsea had Reus up top for the whole of the first half and Torres for much of the second. And if you think Lampard will be supporting England attacks tonight you truly are lost and have little experience of watching England play away. It will be backs to the wall defending for most of the game.
Something Lampard will be well suited to...
Hey, but at least he will have his 100th cap.
That's what it's all about at the end of the day.
Reus? You sure you watched the game???
Reus? You sure you watched the game???

Do you think he meant Schurle?
Yes I did. I was there.
If all you can pick fault with is me getting the name wrong for the lad who played up frontfor a team I don't follow then you really are the shoot magazine fan I always took you for.
If you think Lampard and Gerard will get us a result tonight why don't you truly put your money where your mouth is and suit for good tomorrow when it fails.
The fact is you won't because you have all the credibility and backbone of a squashed worm.

Meant to say quit for good.
How you can come on here creating endless illconceived articles when you have no credibility because you don't back up what you threaten is laughable.
You give plastics a bad name.

Robb, I have an idea. Why you change your username to
Robb - all the credibility and backbone of a squashed worm.
That way everyone would get a good and fair indication of what to expect from your posts and comments.
Robb, to be fair that username would have a ring to it.
Tricky, you are barking up the wrong tree.
let's play worse players and lose so we don't have to moan about the same old players
we'll have new players to moan about this way
Back to the point though.
Should Carrick call it a day and retire now?
Clearly Roy has backed down on the key role he was offering to bring Michael back in and Carrick is not an impact sub type of player.
From a United view I don't see any future in these call ups for Michael and knowing he is a confidence player I can see these bench warming trips being nothing more than a frustration.
Some of us agree with the selections. Some of us don't
Don't blame the players though. All of them want to represent us and for me, we should be getting behind them. (If you are an England football fan that is)
I too think Carrick should be playing ahead of Lampard, by some distance too but Roy sees it differently and it's hardly Lampard's fault tbh
To broaden it even more, The FA clearly do not expect us to do anything in Brazil so why are we even bothering with the older generation? It's a pointless exwecise unless, Roy want to use experience to get there so that he can start given the younger new generation WC experience in Brazil
Unfortunately though, I do not for a minute that is his plan I and fully expect to see Lampard/Gerrard/Milner on the plane and playing too
I'm just surprised he hasn't brought back Barry and Parker
Like I said though, the players on the pitch don't pick themselves so I'll support them for sure and punch the air if we score, no matter who scores it

No point he and Clevs turning out for friendlies just to be dropped for qualifiers and tbf to Clevs, he was easily the best midfielder on display v Scotland

You have to be an idiot of the highest order to think that Gerrard anmd Lampard will work.
Four different managers have now tried this combination with failure every time.
An idiot or Rob. Who is off on his normal routine of filling the board with nonsensical articles.
Spot on Macca. I think people lose sight of the fact that Cleverley has played nearly all recent games for England and has played all United games. On form, youth and suitability to what is required tonight he too should play over Lampard.
