Mosuers are banned from my articles, and anyway what would they know about top four, their usual position for a while now has been around 6th/7th, probably where they will finish this season as well.

Genius/Sizzle
Any right minded supporter surely has to want a trophy, over any position in the league, except winning it. The impression I get is the modern way seems to be all around who has the most money, or who can sell the most shirts to the Phililpino supporters in the Far East, over actually winning trophies. Absolute nonsense.
Finish 13th thus not generating a financial bonus from finishing 4th, and win the league cup
Or finish 4th with a massive increase in revenue with the chance to build long term
Tough one, ideally a club needs to make sacrifices along the way, I'd love a cup win, but I understand that football has evolved, the long term goal is to move to the new stadium which will push us on
Casual fans don't care. When their team wins, there's no high, when their team loses, there's no low. It's an understandable coping strategy if the team you support actually gets knocked out ('oh well now we won't have to play as many games', but to actively hope their team is knocked out of a lesser cup, shows how little winning means in general to them. I'm older and more carefree now, but some of our losses in the past, even in the 'lowly' Carling Cup, were hard to bare.
Unfortunately sandy, supporters views count for little nowadays, CL is the be all and end all for the bigger clubs, and premiership survival takes precedence over cups for the lower teams, football clubs are playthings for rich foreigners, just look at hull city's owner for instance, rich foreign crank.
I detest smileys, such that the one above was not intended.
The real aim is both. At the very least one of them.

forget the top 4 trophy, Arsenal and their fans already celebrating the q/f cup competition trophy
Agree Sandy. Winning a trophy is much better than top 4
The modern fans seem so wrapped up in the champions league
I would tell any fan to watch the replay in 1981 or uefa cup final in 1984 and say where would you of rather been , at one of those games or seeing crouch score his winner at man city for 4th place
I was at the two games you mentioned, and watched Crouchie score his winner against Man City on TV, and whilst it was good to beat City and secure 4th, nothing beat the two nights versus Anderlecht and beating City at Wembley in the Cup Final.
"CL is the be all and end all for the bigger clubs"
Can you blame them ??
40m odd Euros for nothing more mediocre than beaten QFs ??
A few years of that, and your club can build squads capable of keeping the rest of the PL at arms length.

Wotcha Sandy
Either way the aim is the same ..either take the top 4 finish to build a team to win a trophy or, try and win a trophy as it stands. The difference is the quality of the trophy you aim for.
We are a galaxy away from being good enough to win the CL, so would rather we tried for the EL at the moment, as we could not go for it and still not get the top 4.
In most recent seasons around this time of year we would expect to be in the Hunt for the Top 4 and also in at least 1 other cup competition, so its hardly a distraction.

Cant Smile, Spot in mate
If we were guaranteed top 4 and a chance at the CL it would be a more difficult decisiont, but I wouldn't gamble another trophy chance on a possibility of top 4, we arent even favourites for it.
Our squad should be able to handle 8 or 9 changes from the last PL game and get a result in Ukraine, that is why we spent all the Bale money, so we have a large squad.

The Europa League is a joke at the moment but teams like Spurs will be able to use it to get into the CL from next season onwards.
The Top 4 Cup is a very real achievement in the current climate of the PL. It's a bigger honour than the EL & League Cup by a big margin and slightly bigger than the FA Cup.
AFC deserve credit for claiming Top 4 honours 17 straight years.
