Automatic or Manual cars?

The fact is, take any automatic car and put it up against it's manual counterpart, and the manual would accelerate faster provided you have a half way decent driver in the seat.

.............

You don't even need a half way decent driver in an automatic conor. Just put your foot down and off you go.

Coffee in hand.

but thats what I think. I put it to manual and the car feels so light.

All you're really saying there VC is that automatics are for people who can't drive well.

You know full well manual cars accelerate faster, I think you're just arguing for the sake of it.

Autos are easier to drive totally true. But more expensive.. heavier, so less fuel efficient, and harder on the breaks...

But better for things like cruise control, speed limiters and other things on higher end motors like Mr C's Merc.

So get a manual at first, hone your driving skills and save the cash for a few years and buy a luxurious model you can switch between auto and manual.

Not at all conor. I am saying that they are very easy to drive.

It is your assumption that people who drive automatics are people who can't drive well.

That is a rather silly assumption to make, let alone a very childish one.

Is there an element of snobbery ,especially on this side of the pond, toward automatic cars.

Probably more so of automatics being the "norm" on the American side.

Which I suppose they are..

No VC, I was basing it on the fact you said you wouldn't need a half way decent driver in automatic cars.

It's a side issue anyway. My point was, and remains, that manual cars accelerate faster. I thought everyone knew that.

Yes, Automatics are more common over here.

Especially in major cities and their suberbs. It is, however a big misconception that autos are slow out of the blocks. That may have been the case twenty years ago, it certainly isn't now.

The other day I was at a light and a Mustang Shelby pulled up along side me. Once it turned green, while he was going through his first few gear changes, I left him for dead in a 2 litre auto.

By about two hundred yards, he went bombing past me giving me a good wave. I think the shock of him seeing me leave him from the start was too much.

A few minutes later I went past the clot again, while Prince George Counties finest were giving him a speeding ticket.

You don't. It doesn't mean they are bad drivers, as per you comment, correct?

I didn't say they were bad drivers. I said your comment only says autos don't need good drivers.

Maybe his mate pulled it into neutral while he had the clutch depressed... leaving him revving like a loon.

We've all done it, and had it done to us... however if anyone hasn't... don't do this if the car is pointing up-hill.

No one was in there with him.

My point is that there is this big misconception that autos are very slow and laborious from a start.

Now, that may very well be the case in the UK, I have no idea, I haven't driven an auto in the UK.

But, it certainly isn't the case in the USA.

You mean. He was ignoring you and was just sitting there. And you slam your foot down whilst he casually sets off and has a little giggle at you when he realised what was going on before putting his foot down?
