He thinks Kroos is a striker

With regards to the Madrid team, I look at it this way.

They had three of their starting back four on most of the game.

Modric played all of it, Bale played most of it, Isco played all of of it.

Benzema was missing but he isn't as good as our strikers. And the new signings were missing along with Khedira.

So, IMO, it wasn't that weak a team.

VC,

I didn't like the way he set up at the wc, it was effective but i didn't find it particularly entertaining. I didn't think it would work for you guys that well as it came a bit unstuck against teams that say back against holland, which is what a lot of teams will do against you.

For it to work (and enjoyable to watch) I thought he needed to employ a more attacking version of it. Sounds like he is doing.

For once I agree. It was a strong team to field, probably cost more than most PL teams. You could argue that "they were on Pre-Season, they didn't try", but then... So were we... So that argument doesn't really hold water.

The only thing I think was evident was that Real were a bit behind us in fitness levels.

Apart from a 20 minute spell at the start of the second half, I thought our second string did very well, to limit there chances and create quite a few of our own.

Look at the football played in the build up to Young's goal, it's sheer class.

It really does look foreign from what we saw last year. The caveat must be mentioned though. It is a friendly, but the sureness and accuracy of the touches are brilliant.

Tomatoes, the team would probably be back against De Gea if we still had Moyes. Van Gaal encourages us to attack precisely and eloquently.

Very noticeable that we are not stuck on the edge of our box defending anymore.

Who would have though having 3 defenders is not as defensive as imagined.

Why do people keep mentioning 'Blind' as a possible signing? Is it because he is Dutch? Even a hardened-cynic like me who gives short thrift to all transfer rumours, the blind amuses me.

No links whatsoever from myriad members of the fourth estate yet the denizens of ja606 keep trotting out 'Blind'.

It's because he played well in the WC and LVG knows him well and he can play in several positions. Seems reasonable to me to suggest moving for him.

Always looked like the one target we would get from the dutch team. Will be cheap too.

Sounds a bit cliche and simplified, but every man is well marshalled and knows their position and job.

I think Herrera has had a big influence, he seems well suited to this tactic: with his off the ball movement, creating space for him and others, and certainly helping our attacks.

And I think Rooney loves the link up with Mata, Herrera and Fletcher. I can't wait to see Van Persie linking in this formation.

Might be a while. LVG says RVP will miss start of the season.

I was very encouraged yesterday. Two players I'd want to point out (mainly because most on here are too stubborn to give any praise) are Welbeck and Cleverley.
Welbeck played with much more confidence than last season. Very good awareness for Young's first goal. And his pace will be very important in this formation.
As for Cleverley, I think everyone watches him through sh%t tinted glasses. Very good performance yesterday. Passing was very good. Recycled the ball quickly, very often 1 touch. And he also looked forward most of the time (atleast as often as Herrera managed in the first half). He also offers a lot of energy in the middle. I think a lot on here spent so long slating him last season, they can't bring them selves to see he's doing well.
Obviously I would love to sign a world class midfielder to partner Herrera, but I have no problem going into the season with Cleverley.

Fletcher is a far better option than cleverley, who is just not good enough.

I wouldn't argue with Fletch being a slightly better option atm, but he won't play every game. Cleverley can be a very decent option for us in the middle. He gives us more energy than Fletch or Carrick which you need in some games.

_______________

I was impressed with Welbeck yesterday and think he could be one of the chief beneficiaries of the 3-5-2 system. Firstly, he is not really the no. 9 and so there is not quite the same pressure on him to be the main goalscorer. Secondly, his pace and movement always stretches defences. I don't really see Van Persie and Rooney as a partnership - it's more the kind of thing you would choose in a fantasy league team, where you have two star performers but they never have to play together in 'real life'. Welbeck complements Rooney better than Van Persie does.

I seen someone on here say that Zaha was more effective (or words to that effect) than Welbeck when the change was made, made me wander if the chap was on drugs?!?!
