not trying to wum with this guys but how did he walk away from the Anfield hotseat with so much sympathy?

The sympathy for Hodgson lies in the fact that King Kenny was seen to oust Hodgson from within the club. You may remember that King Kenny was also wanting the job at the same time as Hodgson. Hodgson was appointed and Dalglish stayed on as the Director of The Academy (or something).

People in the media thought that Dalglish as soon as he learned that he wasn't getting the job, should have completely left the club and let Hodgson get on with the job without appearing as a vulture over Hodgson's failures.

What happened was that Hodgson managed badly, media kept showing Dalglish in the stands. Media portrayed Dalglish as a backstabber who did what he could behind the scenes at the club to make owners sack Hodgson and reinstate Dalglish as the manager.

When Hodgson was sacked McNulty wrote a BBC web article about Hodgson "Walking Alone" at the club.

As someone said earlier, the Media have a lot of sympathy for English managers. Also the media portrayed that Hodgson was a victim of a conspiracy (in which they think that Dalglish was complicit) to oust him from the Liverpool job.

I'm glad King Kenny stepped in to rescue that season, because no other top manager would have taken the job at the time. The rest is history.
