I grewbup on dave allen. He was a comedian ahead of his time. He was doing observational comedy when most other comedians were telling mother in law type jokes. We spent so many nights as a family in hysterics watching him.

However

His comedy hasnt aged well. Looks pretty tame by todays standards. My son just watched the clip above and gave me a strange look. He was astonished when i told him hiw great this guy was and how highly rated he was as a comedian (rightly)

I remeber a few weeks ago we were channel hopping and came across an old epusode of the young ones. He didnt laugh obce and thought it was a bizarre show. I dont think he believed me when i told him that it was the hottest, most ground breaking show on tv at the time.

Some things are best left alone imo.

Personally I think he would have been just as funny if he'd have been starting out now, he was a great deliverer of mirth...!

Dave Allen, loved him, used to sit and watch most of what he did!.

Mind you, I must admit, Allen would have made a better English teacher than Starr!.

I saw Freddie Starr twice, once at The Circus Tavern in Essex to a packed house he was hilarious, about five years later I saw him at The Cambridge Theatre in London there were about two hundred of us (possibly less) crammed into the front few rows of the stalls.

1st half he was funny (ish) second half he did his Elvis impersonation and didn't get a good reception.

Oh, I think his Old Shep is brilliant!..

But Father Ted and Mrs Browns boys take a bit of beating as well!.

Father Ted was brilliant, can't abide Mrs Brown's Boys, about as funny as being slapped around the face with a bag full of wasps..!

Freddie Starr was accredited with having one of the best impersonations of the King I seem to recall.

I saw Mr Starr once, absolutely brilliant. Supported by Hot Gossip! That was at the Night Out theatre in Birmingham in 1981.

I might add that I saw Jimmy Cricket before he was famous. 1979 at Pontins, my first proper holiday without my parents. Very funny for his time.

Others that have tickled my ribs include Jack Dee, Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Kevin Hird , Michael McIntyre, Sean Lock, Ed Byrne, Jack Dee and somewhat surprisingly, Cannon & Ball!

Sean Lock is very funny. I saw Ed Byrne in Jersey, there were some people asleep in the front row. He didn't go down well. Dara O'Briain was good. Another one I saw in the 80's was Charlie Williams, he was outstanding. Ken Dodd in about 1976 brilliant. My favourite was a little known comedian Tony Gerrard performed in a wheelchair. He was outrageous.

Met Ken Dodd in Amsterdam, well at the airport nearby. Scruffy bugga! Stephen Amos is another I've seen live, very good. Met Charlie Williams and Lenny Henry, both funny guys but never saw them perform live.

45 minutes of it was a bit weary

Can't recall how long he did his impersonation, probably just a few songs but it was good. At that time.
