Sure is Jonty.
Hughes was sickening. Freak accident and gut
wrenching for all concerned.
The Pele news I just heard via you. Awful.
And as you say, add in Gary.

Gutted about Phil Hughes, felt sick all day about it! Such a shame, gutted for Sean Abbott as well, he won't be the same after this

gelderd, I didn't realize they were mates. Not that it
could be any worse for all concerned, but, can't help
Abbott at all. Watching the Aussie players afterward
told us everything we needed to know about how
dire things were. Terrible. Twenty five.

How can he possibly bowl again at full pace now?

Just a sad day for all concerned, I don't usually take 'celebrity' deaths too hard, but this one has hit me! Just a terrible accident

And who has given this article 1 star? Pathetic

The 1 star merchant, I believe is the same person
who one starred a couple of videos the other day.
I said it then, and I'll say it again, that person needs professional help asap. Sad.

Terrible news about Hughes,
Abbott and all ozzie crickters need a lot of support.
Didn't know about pele.

Shocked at Phil Hughes surely they've go to do something about outlawing bouncers...didn't hear owt about pele .....

Really Sad, freak accident that was always looking to happen,
Reports saying Abbott might give up playing .

All I've seen on the Pele story is that he's in hospital with a urinary infection.

As much of a tragedy as it is, you can't start banning bouncers, it's part of the make up of the game.

Apparently Hughes wasn't wearing a fully protective helmet, don't know how true that is. They should be looking at safer headgear rather than banning anything in my opinion

Gelderd.... It looked to me as he had....I feel sorry for the bowler... He must be in bits....I know what you're saying about bouncers, but I would still hope the authorities look at it....

Hughes died as a result of "vertebral artery dissection".
Apparently rare. From what I've seen (I'm no expert obviously), Hughes turned his head as a reflex, exposing the back of his neck - which the helmet design
can't fully protect in its current state. The ball hit his neck/spine at the base and back of the skull, moving upward and at tremendous pace, causing the trauma.
This will be a very difficult design fix based on the fact that a batsman needs a lot of rotation in his head when
setting up to face a bowl. The only other fix, is potentially eliminating the bouncer. Tough one to
legislate. But, when a tragedy like this occurs, actions for the better generally happen. Too late for Phil.
RIP fella.

Awful news. Is this the first time ever in cricket?

I guess what am saying is that sometimes sport ends up with freak accidents. But they are so freaky and rare that banning certain elemental aspects would be counterproductive to the sport itself.

Has anyone ever died during a football game because of an accident that could be legislated against in football? I know with rugby they have banned certain types of tackles to reduce the chance of neck injuries, paralysis and death. Could they ban bouncers from run ups of more than xx yards? Or ban bouncers at players that are known as non specialist batsmen? Or produce a flail type guard using latest technology that wouldn't inhibit movement? Any inhibition would surely be more dangerous to a batsman.

A freak accident it was,
As for banning the bouncer,
So ban,F1,senna and others,
Moto GP,simoncelli,
Skiing,schumacher,not dead but..nearly,
Climing,the nepal lot
My uncle,freak bicycle accident,
These things happen, not good, but most if not all people understand the risks taken, thats why they play these sports.
Banning everything will not work, but a lot of bowlers will have this in the back of their minds before chucking down a 5 and a bit ounce cherry at 90 mph.

LST,

__________

An Indian footballer died last month after injuring himself doing a somersault in a goal celebration. Not sure it's the type of incident you really mean, but I suppose it could be legislated against
