transfers are a lottery

if you buy a lot of players you're going to end up with some lemons. Just look at City and Chelsea. The list of flops / underperformers is a mile long.

It's unavoidable really.

We are generally better at getting more for our money than the high end spenders (Us, Liverpool, City and Chelsea)* though even we have lots of expensive flops, generally the more you spend the more expensive flops you are going to have....

*These days we are getting just as bad as them, previously (pre Moyes) we would get a lot more for our spend than the others.

Lamela, Soldado and Dembele were pretty good signings in principle, don't think you can fault the club for those.

Paulinho I never got. Always looked like he's running through custard on the field

The Kaiser's Trainers

Agreed it is a lottery with a lot of transfer, I reckon only 1 in 3 maximum really hit it off at most clubs. Trouble is clubs like Chelsea and City can waste £100 million and just write it off, and go spend another £100 million. This is the folly of the modern game where spending money is really something that has to be reigned in. Fortunately for Spurs although a lot of money looks to have been wasted, they have found three real gems in Kane, Mason and Bentaleb all coming through the academy, so it is swings and roundabouts I suppose.

Hopefully now a lot of our supporters will not be clamouring for our club to go out wasting another £100 million, a bit of sense and perspective hopefully will start to prevail.

Our most expensive signings ever

Lamala 30m (flop)
Soladado 25m (flop)
Paulinho 17m (flop)
Dembele 16.5m (Kind of a flop)
Bent 16m (Flop)
Bentley 15m (flop)
Rebrov 12m (flop

Seems when we break our transfer record we end up with a flop

This is true in general.

Personally I was delighted to get Soldado. Lamela? I was aware of the hype and reputation (football websites and Football Manager!) but had never seen him play.

Paulinho? Sounded like a good idea to me, played pretty well in the Confed cup in 2013 and he was the man set to provide the goals that Modric didn't score. Dembele was the only one I didn't want.
