Are we that unlucky?

Luck will not be the reason we are relegated this year. We will be relegated because we weren't good enough over 38 games.

That said, we've not had our fair share of decisions an you can't take this away from us either.

I'm personally a fan of refs. I think that they generally make the right decisions 95% of the time which is incredible for saying how much cheating and influencing goes in by players.

But, with technology as it is today, they need more support on te big decisions. They are being chastised in the media for every mistake so they may as well use the same technology to help them. I can see why we can't use the 4th official on red cards and penalties. These are just two hugely important decisions that impact a game.

I don't want the game slowed down, an I don't think it needs to be for tees two things. I know the counter argument is "when do you stop", what about corners etc. But just stop there. Those are the two areas of the game that decide matches. All other mistakes are minor.

I remember on the last day of last season, it was 0-0 when Mahrez ran into the Doncaster area and dived to the floor to win a penalty. Over the years we haven't had nearly as many howlers in our favour than against us, but that was one I particularly recall. Interestingly, the victims of the decision - Doncaster - ended up being relegated by the resulting goal. As such, it does seem that the teams nearer the bottom get more bad decisions against them, but that may be in part due to the fact that the ball is often nearer to their goal anyway, and so any refereeing mistakes made there result in penalties, direct free kicks and potential red cards (like Kisnorbo's two when we got relegated from the Championship).

Another problem is that that kind of mistake is harder for a team in our position to bounce back from: Tottenham would have gone into the match believing that, all things being equal, they should be the better side and claim three points. We probably went in believing that we needed some luck to get anything; therefore when the luck comes against us it's harder to take.

I do think we've been on the rough end of refereeing decisions this year, but then I can't remember a season when this hasn't been so. That said, as you often point out Nev, refereeing decisions alone can't be blamed for our league position.

I would love there to be video playbacks available to the officials during the matches to support critical decisions. I agree that they do get things right 95% of the time on their own, an impressive percentage (in my opinion) given the speed of the modern game, but with such fine margins for teams between success and failure there is still a way to go. If technology is introduced, I would also want offside decisions which resulted in a goal to be included. I wonder where we would be in the table if such technology was in use this season. No doubt this debate will rumble on in FIFA for ten years until something is eventually done. UTF.

We clearly havnt had the rub of the green this season from refs, but that does not change the fact that we are a poor team with a poorer manager.
Decisions do not even themselves out for the smaller clubs and we have suffered badly over the years.
At last the press etc are saying what we have known for years, the standard of refs is at an all time low.
I would even go as far as to say that some are dishonest, giving what they want to see rather than what they actually saw.
Regardless of all our opinions , the fact is that this season 30/40 % of matches have been decided by the officials. That is unacceptable, yet the powers that be do sweet FA.

Over the course of the season we have just not been quite good enough.

How many dodgy penalties did we get last season? Mahrez vs Donny was one, I'm sure there were more as we scored no end of penalties. In the Championship, we're a fairly big sized fish in an average pond. Therefore, we tended to get the benefit of the doubt on dubious decisions.

In the PL, however, we are a smallish fish in a massive ocean. Decisions that are 50/50 will, more often than not, go against us and in favour of the big club. Not saying this is right, but that's how things seem to be, and why big clubs do get the rub of the green against the smaller clubs.

Yes, we have been hard-done by in some matches this season, but was anyone complaining when we were getting the decisions in our favour last year? Of course not.

TLG - exactly my feelings, I don't think there is much in it. Which makes it l the more irritating, because with a little more quality at both ends of the pitch, we could well be comfortably safe and not at all worried about the occasional bit of bad luck.

I wonder where we would be in the table if such technology was in use this season.
..........................................................................
Roughly about the same as the 'new' technology would apply equally to all teams and their own 'dodgy' decisions, or are you assuming the new technology would only apply to Leicester?

Decisions and luck haven't gone our way on numerous occasions but there have been more games whereby we just haven't been good enough.

Beat Hull, Palace, Sunderland and WBA at home and a dodgy pen at Man City and Spurs wouldn't matter as much.

This is the problem for the rest of the season, we need everything to go our way now to even have a chance of a miracle.

Foxello - we did get a lot of penalties last season, but most of these were the result of the opposition hacking down Jamie Vardy after being driven to distraction by him. I remember reviewing them half way through the season and coming to the conclusion that all but one were correct decisions and the other one was still debatable. (I can't remember which one, but I remember my conclusion.)

This was before the Doncaster decision of course, which was the only howler I can remember in our favour. It came at a time when we didn't need it but it cost Doncaster dearly. But such is life in the refereeing world, it seems.

I think we have been unlucky on some occasions but when luck has gone our way we just haven't taken advantage - case in point being the Hull match when Jelavic misses an open goal from five yards out and Huddlestone gets sent off but we still only drew.

I guess the problem is that coming from the Championship we don't know the different rules used in the PL.

Someone should have told Morgan that you can't lie on the floor and head the ball as he did against Liverpool.

RL gave a list of poor decisions given against us this season, I wonder how many points they potentially add up to ?

TB according to RL none? Last night there where five examples none of whichactually lost us the games we have lost 18 games this season that's a lot of poor ref's descisions.
Take the Tot's game based only on the highlights spurs where lucky not to have four in the first half. The Ref booked a Spurs player for diving while Vardy did not get booked for a a triple sulka with a half pike to finish when their keeper got injured.

Poor defending as ever was our downfall and you said without Kasper we would not of got the third i beg to differ even though i am an antique i can kick a dead ball into the centre circle from my area.
most contentious of all i can see why the ref gave a penalty. from his position and the replay it was obvious that Nug was losing his man so he lent on him to stop him in the old days almost a shoulder barge. if it had been Vardy at the other end we would of been screaming blue murder for it?

Refs are poor this season but poor for everyone we just feel it more at the bottom.
