If they were both football teams you may have a point, but I think it is just a coincidence.
Admittedly, I don't have your in depth knowledge of baseball, but from what I have seen over the years teams generally have more peaks and dips than they do in football. Teams just don't dominate baseball the same, mainly because a higher percentage of the teams have huge spending power, as oppose to the 3 main teams in the PL.
