anyone done a total cost of squad one of these?

That would be interesting. No necessary the full squad but at least the starting XI

posted on 28/6/15

kind of have to do the 23

otherwise people would pick and choose who goes in

and Di Maria would be on the subs bench

Good point.

Where is Hafi when you need him?!

TKT, wait till after this summer, and United's will definitely be the highest

To keep it consistent, we should just do the most expensive 11. Obviously with people in position.

Would be skewed also with the likes of Carrick costing £18m for example, because we bought him 8 years ago. If we signed him at the same stage now, he'd be £50m at least. True story.

but Arsenal are better.

Net spend on transfers over the last 5 seasons.

Done over this period of time because you can purchase a good 23/24 year old and by right he should still be with you - 28/29 year old.

Manchester City = £328.1 million.

United - £273.7 million.

Chelsea - £272.2 million.

Arsenal = £95.9 million.

Everton = £25.2 million

Spurs = -£22 million

Didn't bother with the other teams because they're not big clubs

Cost of squad, players that were purchased in brackets, the rest would be free or youth to make up the quota.

United = £371m (19 players).

City = £366.9m (19).

Chelsea = £311.5m (20).

Arsenal = £229.9m (19).

Liverpool = £228.2m (23).

Spurs = £170.4m (21).

All purchases made up to the end of the last transfer window.

If you look at our net spend in Fergie's last 5 years and particularly the last two, you'll see why we needed to spend that cash after he left.

Surely he didn't want to blast the cash as he must've known a new manger would probably be doing the same once he retired. Unfortunately for Moyes he couldn't attract the big names.

If people are counting the cost of the best/most expensive XI's then to do it right you should divide the cost of the player by the years of service he's had at his club. It offers a better view of value for money and highlights good/bad team building.

e.g. Someone costing £20m that has been at their club 2 seasons should have a value of £10m.

You have to consider the situations of each individual club at the time as well.

Net spend over a five-year period seems to indicate the clubs were all starting from roughly similar positions: this time five years ago Manchester City were not even a top four club, for example.

posted on 28/6/15

5 years is reasonable and covers a bit of long term planning and established players as well

6 too many

3 not enough as it would exclude too many spine players of mature sides

it's either 4 or 5

(sorry to waffle, thinking it through as typing)

Who did you buy 6 years ago TKT?

I've got no clue

We sold Ronaldo 6 years ago. Back then, NET spend was our friend.
