a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Better to hold onto a talented player than to sell them and sigh a couple of average replacements.
You used Suarez as an example, could've gone to arsenal for around £40m. Instead Liverpool kept him and nearly won the league, they also then sold him for around £80m.

Stone has 4 years left on his contract doesn't he? So why would his price go down next summer?

posted on 28/8/15

No, he's not for sale this summer if we were holding out for more we'd just say match our price or no deal (like Liverpool with sterling). Circumstances might change next summer at which point if we did sell it would hopefully be early on in the window to find a replacement. As it stands it's too late in the day to sell right now.

Pretty pathetic post BWS. There is more money than top players. Whats the point in selling a player you cannot replace when you don't need the money.

In many cases - Stones, Berahino, the clubs are just trying to get bigger transfer fees- If Chelsea offer in excess of 40 million, Everton will sell and WBA are holding out for close to 30m. I think that in this case the chasing clubs are too eager to part with their money on players who are probably not even worth 15 million.

But is that the reason Everton are saying no to the reported hefty fee ? or are they just being stubborn ?

The reason is that everton want to keep hold of their best players. We're trying to build a young talented squad with the likes of deulofeu stones Lukaku Barkley etc. Selling our best players sends out the wrong message to the fans and the players

You did this with Henry and Viera. And ended up losing £32m in the process.

Doubt it.

We're in the fortunate position that stones has to perform this season due to the euros, better to keep hold imo as it's too late to find a replacement

Schneiderlin wanted to leave but still played well the following season.

Modric did as well. And Ronaldo.

People overplay this unhappy player stuff. They are professional athletes. Just because they don't get the transfer they want doesn't mean they are gping to start crying and play poor.

Not every player is Tevez.

Stones' value is unlikely to change much in the next year, it is already high but he'll have more experience and potentially more suiters and with a good number of years on his contract Everton can afford to do that. Also don’t discount the value he’ll add to Everton over the next year, particularly a lad like Stones, he’ll get his head down and play. This isn’t a Sterling brat we’re talking about. While I doubt they can hold on to him long I wouldn’t expect clubs to just roll over either, he is contracted to them. While I wouldn’t want my club cutting off its nose to spites its face you’ve got to gauge each situation on merit and I wouldn’t go as far as to say this is a show of strength but it does send out a message they won’t just let a prize asset go at someone’s convince and a price set by the buyer.

I can't think of any examples where an 'unhappy' player played badly after being 'forced' to stay additional season(s).

Suarez, Ronaldo (multiple extra seasons), Cesc, Modric, Mascherano, and many others.

If anything they all seem to play out of their skins to get their dream move.

Ronaldo only stayed one extra year.

posted on 28/8/15

You say one, I say three

If you want to settle on 2 I could live with that

posted on 28/8/15

No it was one. Fergie convinced him to stay another year. This is common knowledge, don't know why you keep pushing this three year myth, to be honest.
