All very quiet on Mertesacker!

He was fantastic today beside couple of sloppy moments..What I like about him recently is that he has taken the leadership roles and is more vocal and mentors younger players.

I was surprised but happy that Martial was playing against Gabriel instead of Mertesacker, so I'm not sure I can say Mertesacker was excellent.

Thought mert was disappointing as usual

Great guy, great player.

Starting to think the media underrating him might actually be of benefit to us.

Thought he was probably the weakest of the back four. Though to be honest, that isn't really a criticism as he had a good game and made some key interceptions.

I think the problem for Merte is that, perhaps due to his lack of pace, he has to be a lot more intelligent in his over all play, therefore much of the good work he does goes, as the manager might say, a little bit under the radar.

You don't get many sliding tackles, or thrusting interceptions from him meaning he's not much of a 'highlights' player when it comes to positives, only when it goes pear-shaped.

Hence the public perception that he's not actually all that.

Which of course isn't true.

He was poor today but it was Arsenal day.

Per was superb today, although caught out on a couple of occasions. Its great to have 3 cbs that can play interchangeably and Chambers only needs confidence.

As good as he may have been, it was he who gifted United their 3 best chances.
Easily turned by Martial. Dwelt in possession a minute later. Then in second half a poor clearance led to Rooneys shot that Cech had to save.
Was also the one who found himself deep when Schweinsteiger was put through.

The first two were quite obvious errors, tbh.

It's obvious when Martial isolated him he was done for pace. But I think he's our best defender when we are on the back foot. This is mainly due to teams knocking balls into the box and 9/10 he wins the duels. Also his positioning is top class.
He did a good job overall

only player we have that offers any leadership on the team

wtf?

If anything Mertesacker was our only weak link today, spun around by Martial and twisted up in the wide position at 1 point too, he's the guy that could make a negative difference to us winning or not.

I fear his presence against better opposition like Bayern where CF's will be clinical.

Utds best chances came from Mertesacker today.

Inventor. How do you think Santi played yesterday?

How many headers did he win. How many times did he clear the danger from our box.

Don't let the Stoke game cloud your judgement. Kosc has probably made as May errors as him over the last 3-4 months

Mertesacker had a good game. He made many interceptions and in the air United didnt have a sniff.

You can't complete exclude chances of your opponent. Martial is a decent player and he gets a chance to score in every game.

Honestly, anyone who didn't notice that Per had a brilliant game and was vital to us keeping a clean sheet hasn't got a clue. He was absolutely fantastic with his interceptions etc. Per may have his weaknesses but he is quite simply a top class defender.

Mertesacker was responsible for all the chances Man Utd created. And had Cech not saved his bacon we would have let Man Utd back into the game and crying abt an undeserved Man Utd result like last season.

How did Theo play yesterday, J99?

How many goals did he score?

Your arseblog had him out of the door.

Our next manager has him first choice now.

My Arseblog?

But you didn't answer the question...

But as this is about Mertesacker and Lex's clever wum to change the subject has fallen flat on its face.

Mertesacker is a liability unless you call Martial's and Sweinsteiger's one on ones because of his poor defending as the 'norm'.

No it wasn't at all, J99, so stop being deliberately obtuse and answer the facking question

I think it was an excellent all round performance by Theo. Would have capped it with a goal but he did everything required of a striker apart from getting on the score sheet.

And as I have said since I saw Giroud play 3 years ago. Fast, clever movement is absolutely essential to how we play. Giroud never suited us and its a shame we have had to endure 3 years of mediocrity when Wenger could have bought someone, or moved Theo centrally a long time ago. And as such we are one injury to Theo away from returning to a formula that has failed.
