I thought we played pretty well last night, though of course not serving up thrilling football. Rooney wasn't bad in midfield: tidy, disciplined.

Still, I don't really like Rooney as a midfielder. He's a bit robotic in that he executes the passes that are on - the simple lay-off nine times out of ten and then the raking ball to the wings - but very rarely does anything unexpected to change the pace or disrupt the shuffling from side to side. I'd like to see him have the threat of the unexpected in his armoury in addition: the dribble or sudden pass forward that creates danger.

Superb post, I personally see no benefit playing Rooney in midfield. It worked yesterday but against a team that will press him in midfield, that is not going to work

We have midfielders in the team and they should play in midfield and we should not be shoehorning players into our team.

I thought we were OK last night.

If Rooney has to stay in the team then I would probably put Herrera in there in place of Mata with Martial and Lingard either side of Rashford.

A 4-3-3 with MS sitting behind Rooney and Herrera would not displease me at all on Saturday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with that. If we have Rooney in midfield, I want quicker midfielders around him. And I'd rather see him with licence to get around the box, which Herrera on the pitch in place of Mata would facilitate.

Mudd, do you not allow people to change their mind once they see the evidence in front of them? Do you never change your mind on things?
==============

No, people are allowed to change their minds, if you were to say for instance, whilst I enjoyed Rooney playing in midfield and wrote an article saying so.

I have come to the conclusion now that I was wrong, I am more than happy to accept that.

However you do not and use that to bash the manager when you yourself was happy with it. That's the issue
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well being that as far back as January last season I realised and said on here that Rooney wasn't the great white hope in midfield that I thought he was and you and I discussed that I have to wonder why you bring it up now as if we never discussed that.

Very odd. It's almost like you're playing the man instead of the ball..

Robbie, it depends. When you make a decent article and are not being facetious, I am happy to engage with you.

When you want to wum or suddenly have a bout of amnesia, think it is only fair to assist where I can

But it seems that you have amnesia. I'm happy to dig out an article from last season where I happily explain to you why I was wrong about Rooney being a CM.

Rooney in midfield can work for a couple of reasons.

when he plays as an out and out striker he drops too deep anyway leaving us with little option ahead of him.

secondly, he could very well be our new Frank Lampard.
Lampard wasnt the greatest tackler in the world and kept things simple.

what he did do though was score goals from midfield, something we have lacked for years, and something Rooney is more than capable of doing.

in a 3, it could be a bit of a revelation, but most certainly should never be used in a 2 man midfield.

and again, as far as palace go, if we had west ham and arsenal away as our next 2 games, most on herewould have us down as picking up 2 points max, yet palace have taken 2 points from each of those teams within their last 4 games, both away from home, yet us beating them is seen as nothing.

typical 606 logic

Rooney can't even score goals from up front anymore let alone midfield.

yet strangley enough he is still out top goalscorer despite being out for a couple of months

With a grand total of 7 league goals.

Probably the club doesn't want to label Rooney as a complete loss yet. It may potentially hamper his potential transfer this summer - as it is with his high wages it which may result in him staying out his entire contract which would not be very good.

youre full of shiiit.

we were having a discussion a couple of weeks back when you were saying how form in Europe should also count when it suited your argument.

now because it doesnt, goals in Europe dont count.

We really need to pimp Rooney out to a Chinese club. 30m and 300k off the wage bill.

Okay, let's bring Europe into it...

Rooney's 4 goals in Europe have been..

A hatrrick against an awful Brugges side and one against CSKA at home.

'The new Lampard'. Jesus Dink, stop being the new Ja606 Devils advocate.

There are posters on our forum who have a far better recollection of what their adversaries have said in the past than my memory of what I have said. I'm curious what they get out of this point scoring.

You must all be looking at Klopp and thinking Wow that lad's unreal, Origi too, only a matter of days before we go above in the league and then will probably be above you for a decade I'd say easily.

Rooneys best position is on the bench, or up front for a different club, perhaps Everton.

Wish we'd find a way to get rid of him.
