In my view Atletico Madrid far more impressive yesterday than they were against Barcelona where they only tried to defend. Against Bayern they played an entertaining first half and see out the game in the second half. Second half was more like the Barca performance.
What I want Arsenal to learn from Atletico's approach is to stay diciplined a whole long game and to defend as a unit. Therefore we need to buy defensively first and then upfront.

FFS, look at how they beat Barca. Convincingly over 2 legs despite playing 70 mins of the 180 with 10-men and unfavourable red card decisions (Suarez and Iniesta should have walked) that could have cost them. How do you watch a tactical masterclass like that which is routine for Simeone and turn your nose up at him. It's ludicrous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But they didn't constantly pass it around the defense and midfield before giving it away and losing a goal on the counter attack.
THAT is exciting football.

To be honest you guys know how to play, just not finish.
Get Mark Hughes and Ole Solskjaer as a duet, not only will they teach you how to finish, they'll sing your players a great power ballad at half time.
Just because Wenger has been crap recently doesn't mean that the style we should evolve into with a new manager should be the polar opposite to what Wenger has been pretending to do since we sold RVP and Cesc.
Jenius - Do you not think our style/mentality needs a complete overhaul?
Its been a decade of failure that proves Wenger's teams are inherently weak, how many times have we seen Arsenal collapse after leading from 2, 3 or 4+ goals? That is against likes of Newcastle ifs
What Simone does is terrific, with Arsenal's budget and style not only would Arsenal have solid defence but deadly counter attack and footballing style that could match any team in the world.
What 'Arry does is t'rrific, with Arsenal's budget and style not only would Arsenal have solid defence but deadly counter attack and footballing style that could match any team in the world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree that mentality does. I remember a time when we used to have one player sent off every game around 98-2004. But we were compact and committed. Wenger used to bring in Ray Parlour and Edu and stiffen up the midfield and Kanu to hold the ball up front instead of Bergkamp and we used to see off games when we weren't playing well. So its not all about style.
The problem is that Wenger favours the older players too much and they have let him down over the last 4 years. How any times have we heard the leaderless accusation of our squad. We have too many slow, lazy players and that has been highlighted by weak spine. (Elneny now improving that a fair bit, though its still present with Giroud and Mertesacker).
Simeone is the flavour of the month at the moment. And to an extent you can compare his management style (not playing style) to what Renieri has done with Leicester. I don't think he is the type who can buy bigger name players and sooth their egos to get them to buy in to his concept. Klopp has had those problems till the Dortmund result. Its one reason why Chelsea didn't go for him even though their squad/playing style is far more suited to his high work rate counter attack tactics.

There is a reason why Simeone is still at Atheltico and not at Bayern/Inter/Juve/Man Utd/Chelsea/PSG.
A lot of directors far cleverer than me have considered him and then dropped the idea after a bit of due diligence.
I don't think we would be considering Simeone for Arsenal had Bayern put two past them instead of Pep resting his attacking players and settling for a narrow defeat or draw.
However one thing that Simeone's success does prove, and in fact you can add Ancelotti, Pep, Enrique to the list is that sometimes ex-players who have performed at the highest level can make good managers.

Atletico generally play dreadful football, but it works for them. I don't want to see that kind of football here. The kind of football I want to see here is the dynamic style that Heynckes had Bayern playing in his last season. Closest to that would be Schmidt, Tuchel and Pochettino. The latter two would be very unlikely.

Lets leave Wenger out of it cause I am not defending him. I said in 2012 that Wenger now has the budget to win things and he has to prove by the end of his next contract that he can win the title to dispel the belief that David Dein had far more to do with our success than the media gives him credit for.
Pep is a known workaholic. Its one reason for his sabbatical a couple of years ago. He has tremendous preparation for every game. And he doesn't believe in the preposterous old fashioned idea that you can impose your game on the opposition. So the fact he altered his gameplan for Athletico is no surprise. But I believe you shouldn't confuse that with being intimidated or fear. Its just respect for what Simeone has done for Atletico.
The point is do I believe Simeone can replicate that at clubs where the expectation and the dressing room egos are far higher is questionable. You also have to take into account that Atletico were almost bankrupt. They are run by a family which has a very poor corruption record in Spain. So Simeone's hard working ethos and style fits them like a glove because he can't rely on the fancy-dans who flit from club to club.

Agree with this fully, honestly dont understand what people are watching when they say Atletico play dreadful football. These guys are very technically proficient, regularly put together some devastating counter attacking moves, and actually neatly retain possession very well when they need and choose to.
People seem to label them boring as they're happy to concede possession in favour of prioritising defensive solidarity and commitment first, then followed by quick attacks. They don't give up leads easily, and they do attack in numbers when they sense the opposition is down, but also have enough awareness not to overcommit unnecessarily.
Give me that over what we serve up nowadays and i'll take it and run
