My initial comment was factual....he has been one of the best players on the pitch 90% of the games I've been to Goodison. I can pretend he was awful if that makes you happy?
To balance it, I have seen him play terrible as well, when United walloped them 0-3 last season. But to be honest, the whole defensive unit under Martinez was shocking most of the time.
Defenders' errors, like goalkeepers, are often highlighted to ridiculous levels by the media, but all players make mistakes, especially young ones. As I said in my first post, the lad has potential. He's not the real deal yet, but I've seen more than enough of him to know he has all the tools to get there

now obviously stones is way further along his development but I think you are confusing potential with current status.
To be fair chronic comparing with wimmer aint right. Wimmer was 5th choice austria centre back and 4th choice Koln centre back. The price was a fair one given what had been shown.
-------
then by the same accord stones must not be worth 50m based on what he has shown.
from what he has shown so far (hes not even always been an automatic starter for everton ffs), he is worth about 8 mill. add the young potential thing you get to 13 mill, add another 5 for being English.. 18m is about right, although tbh that still sounds a bit pricey.

John Stones is a top quality centre back. Dont be confused because Martinez served him up last season as the sacrificial lamb. Lumping pressure on a young player who then surprise surprise makes loads of mistakes.
Reminds me of Sergio Ramos not just playing right back and centre back but his style on the ball really cultured but can tackle with ease.
Half a season with Pep and Kompany, head shoulders knees john stones will be one of the top defenders in the league.
50 mill is 50 mill city always pay them fees, clubs expect that when they come knocking.
To be fair chronic comparing with wimmer aint right. Wimmer was 5th choice austria centre back and 4th choice Koln centre back. The price was a fair one given what had been shown.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dont buy this at all.
Stones has ability for sure, but aerially he's not that great. Position wise he's not that great, if it wasnt for the fact he's very comfortable on the ball he would not get in most teams
PLUS....to be a good player you need some intelligence. Make mistakes, sure! but learn from them. Cryuff turns in your own area, coughing up possession in/around your box trying to pass it out is foolish. Its not the fact he tries these things, its the fact he keeps getting it wrong.
Many many teams will high press this season. It is thus important for CBs to be able to pass the ball and build from the back. But it is equally as important for them to judge properly when to do this and when not to. Stones hasnt learnt this yet. He is just 22/23 so if he does have a brain he probably will learn, especially from Pep. But i still think his underlying defensive basics are not great., particularly in this league where CBs still need to have physical presence.

£50m for a potentially top class CB they can get a good 10 years out of is a pretty good deal in my opinion. What's £50m to Man City anyway?

50 million
for that price you can buy a top proven defender in their prime, or approaching their prime.
rather than a kid who has shown very little to suggest that he will be anywhere near world class
Do I think he's worth £50m right now? No. But do I think he has a number of interesting attributes that with 2-3 years of Guardiola coaching will produce a player who justifies the fee? Most probably. Plus, if you're looking at the finances as a whole (fee+wages), it probably balances out to the same as paying £30-35 million for a prime, proven defender with higher wage demands.
This is now the state of the market. A load of mega-rich clubs paying huge sums for unproven players with potential simply to prevent the other mega-rich clubs from getting them instead. See Renato Sanches.
He has obviously shown he has potential, why would Pep even be bothered by him if not? It's a good deal for City, he always enjoys CBs who are confident on the ball, and with his system I'm sure Stones will thrive.

when you said city, did you mean to say Everton?
Stones isn't worth £50m at this moment in time and personally I'm not sure about him.
I will take comfort in the knowledge that Pep knows what he's doing and Stones is the ideal young centre back that will be moulded into his idea of how a defender will play under him.
Pep probably doesn't think he's worth that kind of money yet but that's the price he has to pay for that kind of player who's also English which probably adds £20M to his price tag.

Kane is (I think) only one year older than Stones. Last season he was top scorer in the PL, season before he was Young Player of the year.....
He's English, he's had two consecutive high scoring seasons, and strikers always seem to cost more anyway.
So 'if' Stones is worth 50m (he's not) then Kane would comfortably be worth at least £60m, even after a disappointing Euros, where Stones didn't get a kick.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think his positioning is pretty sound to be fair, as his timing. All his stand out issues come from his decision making on the ball. And when you have Martinez as your coach, playing in an Everton side that is so open, it is only going to highlight it more. I don't think for a second he is worth 50 million, but he could be in a few years and that is what City are banking on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
agreed on Martinez, he has never been able to organise a sound defence.
Re: Stones' positioning, I am mainly refering to his position at crosses. IMO he seems to get caugh to under the ball, letting players get in off the back of him.
In the Spanish league he'd be knock out, especially in someone like Barca who spend less time defending than most and all their players are comfortable on the ball. If Mascherano can make it as very successful CB then that says it all really. He could not do that in this league.

Kane has scored 21 goals and 25 goals in 2 league seasons. There is no doubting his ability and what he can do. I'd say he is worth comfortably ore than £30m. Probably £40-45.
If he scores 20+ this season then he joins an elite of 6 who have scored +20 EPL goals 3 seasons on the trot. That puts him in very high company.
This season will tell a lot. another 20-25 goals, and a good showing in the UCL and he really will be in the £60m+ bracket.
Stones on the other hand has proved very little. So far its 80% potential and 20% delivery. Personally i think a season under Koeman would have been just what he needed before making the next step....now he goes to City with a massive price tag and a lot of pressure on his shoulders

Stones isn't worth £50M.
Kane isn't worth £60M.
Both are worth probably half these valuations, English player tax.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kane has scored 21 goals and 25 goals in 2 league seasons.
