Completeness wise then Gerrard, Keane or Vieira. Toure was up there but didn't the longevity those three had in terms of being a complete midfield player.

No lampard? He may not have been as naturally talented as some of those named but he was effective in everything he did and his football brain was up there with Scholes.

Beckham??????

Go and sh!te ffs!

Good engine, great cross, free kick and pass but if he'd have been playing for Everton in the premier league instead of that Utd side he'd be no where near what he was.

You either never really watched Beckham at the peak of his powers between 97-2001 or you did but have no clue what you are talking about/looking at.

Becks was pivotal to United whilst at the club. Very intelligent footballer, who could spot the pass - including the outrageous ones that most players can't execute - always took the brave option with is passing and could pull it off, supreme crosser of the ball. Scored goals, assists (extremely productive), worked hard, could play in the centre and play-make and set attacks off from deep positions with his vision and passing. That's before we talk about his set pieces.

No, i would have him alongside any of the above. I was only talking about the most complete in terms of skill set rather than the best. Otherwise, Lanpard and Scholes definitely in there.

Scholes' tackling was no worse than many a fine midfielder. Blown out of all proportion by lazy people just trotting out 'Scholes can't tackle'.

He could tackle, it just wasn't his best asset. People will point to some bad tackles, but so what. Keane, Vieira et al were all guilty of bad tackles. Sometimes deliberate like Scholes. Gerrard was guilty of some absolute shockers, potential career enders. But he can tackle...

Yeah arriving in the box at the right time etc actually very good overall along with the fact he was a goal machine of a midfielder.

Its hard to pick one, i'd have to go with Gerrard might be bias but i don't think any of the other midfielders could do what he did for us under the same circumstances where as i'd back Gerrard to do what the others did for their teams and be just as successful.

The others were without doubt in better teams most of the time etc and people seem to favour/remember players from the better more successful teams.

Dean Saunders on BBC final score......
"If I was Klopp, I'd offer Gerrard a contract, he's better than Henderson, Can, Lucas and all the other midfielders at the club"

Keown....."Yeah, he could play Midfield, Left Back, Right back, Centre back, he's still got it"

he's certainly in contention

once you get to a certain level it's really down to opinion or preferred style

It's funny but to be fair he had a really good game, especially in possession.

Quite a few players could be mentioned in this discussion and there isn't much to separate some of them.
Gerrad definitely belongs in the discussion. He was one of the most complete players I've seen. He was everything you'd want from a footballer during his prime years.

scoring wise scholes and gerrard were the pretty much the same

but overall scholes was a level above gerrard

So midfielders only score?

Lampard was the daddy then!

Complete midfielder = able to to everything, Scholes couldn't but Gerrard could!
