Wigan Athletic V Forest Match Thread

Wigan lost their last game away to QPR 2-1 on Tuesday night. New signing Omar Bogle scored a 17th minute penalty after being brought down by Joel Lynch to equalise. Not enough to earn a point though. Before that Wigan took 4 points from their previous two games.

I agree Bear; rather than being a must win game this is a must not lose game. That said I would go with a second striker simply because we have more good strikers than good midfielders.

A Dougie Freeman approach of two solid lines of four is needed. Add some pace to make sure we can hit them on the break and make them defend deep.

Agreed 👍 We're in a position where we'll pick up the same, if not more points than most teams below us.

With us still to play burton, Wigan, wolves, and blackburn, as long as we don't collapse against most of these teams we'll be safe enough to be worrying about next years survival.

We need to go into these games looking for all three points. When have we ever gone into a game with the aim of just 'not losing' and not been smashed...

We've never won away to Wigan and as crap as we think they might be we could easily lose this so I'd take a draw.

Unless we can field a decent CB partnership then I'd say we're in big trouble. Fox doesn't cut it for me despite his decent distribution. We need one of Hobbs or Mills to come back in or maybe bring back Perquis who isn't a bad player. It would be good if Worral and Mancienne can play but it sounds like we're still short.

Fox and Worrall did look a bit shaky against the Owls, but Rhodes and Forestieri is a very good pairing and I don't expect the same threat tomorrow from Wiggum's strike force. I think we are lucky to have Worrall and Fox as fourth and fifth choice centre backs (if that is what they are).

Our strikers are better than theirs. Britt, Clough, Brereton, and McCormack would all get in their team, maybe Vellios too. i think we should have two on the pitch from the start tomorrow.

What about tonight's game at Burton? What result suits us best from there?

Bogle against Fox is not something that gives me confidence. We do have better strikers but Brazil needs to play Clough in order to create chances for Britt or McCormack.

I expect us to be set up to play counter attacking football. Their home form is terrible and they need to win at home to stand any chance. They will see Forest as a opportunity to grab three points.

We need to defend well and be prepared to attack when the inevitable gaps open up. Game management as G.B referred to is vital; as is coming home with a precious away point.

Forest shouldn't be looking to shut the game down v Wigan. They haven't got the players to do it. Keep the decent football of recent weeks going and see if a bit of ruthlessness can be discovered by the forwards.

Clough deserves a start for me. Looks like he could be the most creative player in the Forest side since Reidy.

Defence is a worry and I do think Forest will have to score at least once to get something out of the game. Smith must continue in goal as he looked pretty impressive v Wednesday. Saved Forest from a bigger defeat IMO. Crucial as I think goal difference will play a big part in separating teams. Forest's isn't great after the five that the Budgies out passed them.

Morning!

Assombalonga is up for it today looking at his interview in the Post. Says he enjoys the competition provided by the new signings and BB. Guess he only really had Vellios to compete with before. Bendtner kind of played himself out of contention!

I'm feeling positive today. I'm doing Wigan 0-2 Forest with Assombalonga and Brereton on the scoresheet. Take advantage of Wolves losing yesterday, Burton and Blackburn drawing and hopefully a few more other results around Forest going well this afternoon.

Results went well for us last night, hopefully that will take a little bit of pressure off us and put some on them. It is a must win game for them.

Yes, they do need a win now to keep pace. Hopefully make them a little edgy and Forest can sneak a goal or two.

Wigan don't really deserve to play in the Championship, if they play Rugby League matches on the pitch uurrrggggghhhhh.

Last nights game was moved, so the pitch is 'rough' [my words] but just about playable.

This match is a banana skin in waiting. Not the time for trying to play out from the back, two lines of four out of possession and then break and play the long ball.

We have never won there I believe so now would be a good time to correct that abnormally; but the right tactics are required. We have the fire power certainly.

Yes, the Wigan manager isn't happy with the state of the pitch. Peed it down in Notts last night so I can't imagine it wasn't the same in Lancashire. Going to be heavy going and going to need a wise use of substitutes to try and maintain a competitive XI.

Type of game for the likes of Worrall, Vaughan and, if he was in favour, Vellios to throw their weight around.

Wigan manager says they haven't done much training this week. Didn't get back till 4am after the QPR game in midweek. Seems a bit daft? Surely they could've afforded a hotel? The long drive back up the M6 would drain the life from most mere mortals, never mind superstar footballers!

Hopefully Forest can catch them a little cold if they are under prepared. Brereton and Assombalonga upfront I would suggest to try and work their defence hard from the off. Doesn't seem like Vellios is going to get a look in on the bench so the back up is likely to be McCormack and Clough.

Any team news yet?

Hobbs had a different coloured tracksuit on looking at the live NFFC feed. Does that mean injured players get demoted in this way?

At number one, its Brian Rice...

Blimey that's an attacking line up.
