To quote Mrs May, now is not the time.

Just read that is the expected announcement.

It also throws a spanner into IndyRef 2 if SNP lose any seats in Scotland. Pretty clever call by May. Labour is so weak right now that it is a breeze of a win for her and Scotland could be the biggest victory even if Tories don't win any seats but Labour do

To quote Mrs May.

She has decided it is indeed the time. What chance one of the election promises is a re vote on Brexit?

Kills the IndyRef2 stone dead as well.

Yes I think they will and it gives them the chance to offer up a new vote. Just my thoughts anyway.

It is clever by May.

Labour weak.
UKIP a mess.
Cuts the SNP off.

The only clear beneficiaries of this are the Tories and potentially the Liberal Democrats who might find their feet now.

The fact they're making it about Brexit as well suggests that this "hard Brexit" policy was always geared towards this announcement.

On Brexit, I find it disgraceful that the Tories aren't opening negotiations up to a cross-party format. Brexit is for everyone after all, not just the Tories.

I was just hazarding a guess Ivan. Have they said it's about Brexit?

Not directly but her quotes from the speech have all been about Brexit and the implications. I suspect that's how she'll be framing the election.

On the other hand, the SNP should be framing this election on mandates for independence. The more extreme supporters of independence should be calling for a UDI as part of the manifesto if they reach a certain percentage of the vote - I suspect that won't happen though. The SNP should benefit though as they'll undoubtedly win the majority of seats.

as weak as labour are, imagine voting for the tories again.

Just reading it now Ivan. The thoughts are that she will use this to rid herself of the backbencher who she sees as deliberately railroading her plans for Brexit and weakening her hand. If she succeeds then she will have carte blanche on a very tough stance with Europe.

With the growing right wing views in the country I can't even see the Lib Dems troubling the Tories. As Ivan said, this is a perfect time for the Tories to stay in power.

Yeah I think this will be a single issue election - Brexit.

The Lib Dems should be licking their lips as they've been the consistent 'anti-Brexit' party down south since the start. They could make a recovery of sorts.

With the disarray in UKIP, this could kill them off.

It's a bold, bold move from May though. Didn't think she had it in her.

When is the independence vote?

Be interesting to see if Osborne survives .

Curly.

If she allows a re vote on Brexit and it goes through then the major point of this new IndyRef is lost. We stay in Europe.

Not sure that's her game though.

Curly - I think this potentially cut harm the independence movement as the election becomes ultimately a pre-independence vote up here. If the SNP don't get a mandate (at least 50%) of the vote then the Tories will be able to throw away their arguments. They might even be confident of taking a few seats from the SNP.

The Lib Dems will try and turn this into a Brexit campaign which might very well get them votes given the state of the Labour Party.
