I blame Fraudiola most of all for this
Despise that coocksucker

Green with envy I see.

He’s not wrong, though. Pep doesn’t like individual flair.

I wondered why KdB, Foden, Rodri and Bernardo never get a start these days.

posted on 1/4/24

They don’t really play with flair, though. And KDB and Foden are the only ones to play with the risk to give the ball away. Pep is unbelievable, but there’s no denying he’s hugely responsible for individual flair being stifled at the top level.

Klopp’s also massively responsible. This is the same bloke that said the best playmaker in football is the high press.

It depends how you define 'flair'.

Players like Best, Marsh, Frank Worthington, Stan Bowles etc disappeared long before Pep turned up.

posted on 1/4/24

Zlatan didn’t. He disappeared from Barca because Pep valued off the ball work higher than his flair and skill. That’s fine, Pep’s been unbelievable successful with this attitude towards flair players, but don’t try and pretend that he’s not been hugely responsible for the result of it.

I never liked Zlatan and certainly wouldn't group him with the other players I mentioned when it comes to flair.

Pep developed a system that usually wins trophies through teamwork and application and I can accept that.

You’re just moving the goalposts.

No I'm not.

I appreciate an exciting player as much as I appreciate us winning trophies but I know which one'd pick if it was one or the other.

Zlatan was probably a bad example because I've never liked him.

posted on 1/4/24

You are, because you’re saying you don’t like him and he doesn’t fit into your grouping of flair players. It’s the perfect example because it’s exactly what Pep did. Nobody is asking you to pick between one or the other, you’re trying to deny a point made that you’ve actually ended up contradicting yourself on.

I don’t know why I bother, you’re more facking defensive than scousers.

Thanks for updating me on who I should and shouldn't like.

You're more of a facist than Peks.

I implore you to watch 90 minutes of any game from the early 00s and you'd realise how wrong you are.

Football has improved in terms of quality but as a spectacle imo is worse.
Too much choreographed football & tactical straight jackets placed on players
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I do actually agree with this. Bring back strike partnerships and lazy number 10s that aren’t judged on their pressing numbers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There is some truth to it, the levels of fitness, tactical developments and significantly improved level of the "worst" players has decreased the value of flair players.

Yet I really really can't stress enough what rewatching old football games is actually like. As a product I think it was most enjoyable around the 2009-2014 region.

I think it depends on the teams, to be fair.

And I watch Manchester United now so I can tell you just how shiiiiiiit modern football can be.

posted on 1/4/24

I first noticed it when I watched a Utd vs Arsenal game from around then & there was honestly 3 or 4 different 5 minute periods of the ball just been hoofed back and forth over and over.

I've rewatched a few international games and a couple CL games and its not too different either. One of the worst ones is my dads Everton 95 FA Cup win DVD that I've been unfortunate to watch a few times which is an interesting ask

The highlights are good, but the lulls in play are just so much worse. Having defenders and keepers with quality on the ball has added so much to the product.

Are you ETH out?

posted on 1/4/24

Yeah I know what you mean with that. Although I think you’re not considering that the lulls in games now are just short passes going back and forth between opponents, mixed in with long balls.

I’m indifferent about Manchester United managers. I hate our squad and we won’t be able to change things significantly without gutting it. Whether it’s with someone new or not I don’t really care, but it needs a massive clear out.

You picked a player I didn't particularly like because of his tendency to employ the dark arts - Ergo, I probably didn't make a conscious effort to watch him that often.

Pick another player Pep 'ruined' and maybe we can continue.

I can totally understand Spurs fans bemoaning the lack of flair, they signed some of the most exciting players I've seen during my years of appreciating footy. Even now, Son is probably my favourite, non City, PL player.

Jovetic?

Jake Greelish has had all the flair coached out of him.

Edin, yeah probably. I think he made a bad decision joining Chelsea when he did because they are a shiiiiiitshow, and Poch is struggling there as well despite being a good coach.

But then it’s not like United are particularly stable, and he may flounder under the pressure here as well. We’ll see, I’m more concerned about what we do with our recruitment because that’ll have an impact on how any manager is going to do, as well as who we might be able to attract - there’s going to be big competition for managers this summer and we aren’t exactly the most attractive, despite the status of the club.
