Embarrassing

Whats embarrassing about it exactly?
If you or I were to take up boxing why would that be any more or less embarrassing?

If its something he has an interest in why shouldnt he? Was it embarrassing when Leon Mckenzie took up the sport and won a British title?

If he isnt very talented and in turn takes opportunities away from lesser known more talented fighters then that is what I disagree with.

But for him to say he is looking to get his pro licence, I cant see what is wrong with that?

I think the fact he's 38 is what makes it ridiculous.

Leon McKenzie also grew up around boxing, with his old man and uncle both being champion boxers.

This just scream of a pointless publicity stunt.

If he goes straight on to tv then yes I can see the publicity stunt but if he is billing small shows that aint on tv let me tell you from experience that the lower level fighters will be thrilled as it would greatly increase their income and popularity from fighting on the same bill in sold out small shows that otherwise wouldnt be. As i said if he goes straight down the tv route then yes that is not good !

At first I denigrated this whole story but having actually had time to contemplate his decision, I'd say good luck and I applaud his courage. Hopefully he respects the sport and understands the dangers involved. I do not think he has any aspirations of becoming a world champion but he probably just wants to test himself against guys in the same position as him.

Anybody willing to pit themselves in a sporting environment foreign to them, should be commended for doing so.

As mentioned above, as long as he doesn't attempt to milk it and charge people to watch him, I see no issue with it.

exactly, its an awesome sport and can help people in so many ways. So long as he doesnt take away opportunities for others, I say fair play I recommend boxing to everyone at any level at any age, to try it. Obv not everyone should turn pro but they should at least try the training or some light sparring with big gloves and headguards on. The buzz you get is quite different to almost any sport

We should also note that Rio is hardly some out of shape Freddie Flintoff. He is athletic and keeps himself in shape which makes his transition to boxing a more favorable one for him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That and he has been in boxing gyms and dabbled with it for around 6 years now, solely focusing on boxing for the last year or so now. There is levels in boxing just like many sports he doesnt have to go in at the top end. I respect anyone willing to give it a go it aint easy but it is rewarding.

It's the TV route, not the small scale fights first. Documentary style series on TV with a bout at the end of it. Flintoff mk2.

If boxing wasn't a farce already, now we have this ex druggie wanting to make some money from the sport which is becoming like WWE Wrestling by the day.

Rooney and Harry Kane need to get in on this, rioneys orc head could deflect the moon. He won't be going down. And Kane has no brain to damage.

Rooney has already shown that his punch resistance is about as formidable as Khan's.

Well there's always Kane. No brain in his head, plus his mug already looks like tysons used it for target practice. He'd be invincible.

Don't get the hate, it's only because he's well known as a footballer it gets criticism , like anyone else he's free to try and become a boxer if he wants too, he's not the first ex footballer to and won't be the last, agree it likely is just one fight for the tv show, but he has nothing to lose everything to gain.

posted on 20/9/17

It's because he's 38 and it's a publicity stunt.

posted on 20/9/17

So what though? Publicity stunt or no publicity stunt he's still going to have to go through the training and everything else and put work in.

Don't get me wrong I'm not Rio's biggest fan by a long stretch, have zero respect for someone that cheats on his wife with at least 15 women over the course of 5 years and then tries to play the poor little Rio act, but there's nothing wrong with him wanting to do this, regardless if it's for tv.

Dubious as to why the bookies approached him to do it rather than him doing so off his own accord. I'm sure he's got the finances and connections to get in touch with the relevant people to initiate this so I'm slightly sceptical about this. If this is a new passion of his then no offence but what's the need for a documentary? To raise awareness and the profile of boxing and fitness? He's had a rough time of it in the last couple of years without question so if this is something he wants to take up for various reasons then great, but right now I fail to see what a documentary brings to the table other than self-promotion.
