Are these EV's cheaper to run than oil engines?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My running costs are likely to drop by 70-80% I think. Dependant on energy cost I guess.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess you will save on servicing as well. 👍
What is the life of the battery supposed to be?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Initially it was predicted 10-20, but monitoring of the health of the batteries out in the world today are showing less degradation than expected.. 15 is pretty much the expectation now for when the battery might hit between 60-70% health
In theory the car could go on longer than that as a town car, you just will be looking at a 100 mile range rather than 200+
Further to that it costs substantially less to run, has less moving parts, and no ICE engine shaking the car apart means everything should last longer...
And finally the whole "buying an EV is more damaging than a second hand car" is a ludicrous fallacy, if no one buys a new car there will be no second hand cars, let alone more environmentally friendly options.
With the current system of ownership, and state of public transport every car that leaves circulation through scrappage or write off needs to be replaced, or there just won't be enough. Environmentally conscious "lefties" are ensuring that the next crop of second hand options are substantially better for the environment.

Mine has taken waaaay too long, and I got married on Friday too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Congrats dude! I hope you had a nice day!
I've been engaged for what feels like an eternity!
Speaking to miss Hawk - we are considering about eloping. Neither of us are that bothered regarding the ceremony.
We are though thinking about the disappointment about getting hitched without the traditional wedding. As I doubt our relatives and friends will be so happy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And on this - I’d say wait and do it how you generally imagined, it’s a big day and hopefully a unique one-off so do it ‘properly’ whatever that means to you both. Create lasting memories mate

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, it's just really quite simple math.
If everyone stops buying cars that 34 million will drop extremely fast, in 2016 it was around 3.1 million new cars being bought a year.
Last year it fell to just 2 million due to covid and the chip shortage, and we are already seeing the second hand car market explode as a result, I bought my car for £12.5k brand new in march 14, they are currently selling on auto trader for £7k with 80k miles on the clock (mine has around 50k.)
ICE cars average lifespan is about 10 years. The vast majority of cars at the moment are ICE, you cannot keep them going forever. By buying an electric car you increase the proportion of that "34 million cars" that are environmentally friendly. It's a net positive.

For many people cars are nothing but vanity products. Cars can be fixed and last well beyond 10 years... you can even go to the extreme and look at Cuba's cars.
Being a car nut myself I would never begrudge someone buying a new car, but it isn't an environmental choice. Some of it is to do with the manufacturers themselves making parts expensive/stopping manufacturing of parts that pushes the market to buy new things (that can be applied to many appliances today).
Imo, electric cars are not there yet. Improvements will be made over the next 5-10 years that will make the current models almost worthless. Batteries could shift to graphene or even move to the Nio car battery swap idea. That not to forget the hydrogen or other alternative fueled cars.
Buying an electric car today is an environmental choice? No, not at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The battery swap idea is a non starter, the liabilities involved with the risk of electrocuting yourself.. no chance
And electric cars are already extremely viable, they are a far better choice economically, and whilst you can maintain cars well beyond 10 years. How many miles are on them? Unless you are regularly replacing parts and rewelding joints ICE cars are made with a mileage of 150k in mind.
If you completely rebuild your car to keep it on the road, the net effect is that you have bought a new car. You are just maintaining something older and dirtier.

I have read that you are in Mexico? How have things been for you?
Also, last year you introduced me to HasanAbi through the thread. Been watching a little bit of his stuff from time to time. He is quite entertaining!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
BH, have you seen Benji Shapiro's rant against HasanAbi? Worth a listen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not!
As I have never heard him say anything worth listening to!
And thats not because he is conservative - there are plenty of people I dislike who are still quite fine engage with (like for example, JP).
Still, it might be interesting looking up whatever nonsense he has said now lol!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oi!
I remember you (rather accurately) characterising me to others as a classic liberal like Shapiro!
He and others similar lose on various topics; mostly anti-vax (can’t remember if he is, don’t think he is), abortion and gun rights.
Economics and pushing back against the identity politics items I’m generally in agreement with him/others. Most of their thoughts that they espouse generally come from Thomas Sowell / Walter E Williams types.
I can appreciate that Shapiro is an annoying character but he’s no shambles, despite the small handful of examples that people can quote from the internet (vaginosis etc).

So just like last year then....

😂
Honestly at this point I hope they completely fail and somehow Starmer gets in.
1. They don’t deserve to be in charge
2. It will give me the opportunity to constantly criticise a Labour government on here
3. It will create better competition again, the current standard across the board are diabolical

Just completed on my house, so I have now officially moved to Somerset.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mine has taken waaaay too long, and I got married on Friday too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
32 million vehicles in the UK... I think there are enough second hand cars. 😂
Your last two paragraphs are a mess. 👍
