Colonised countries are not necessarily bottom of the food chain, Hong Kong and Singapore being prime examples.
Africa has indeed been pillaged by Europeans, but that isn't the whole story. Unfortunately for many countries in Africa they have been the whipping boy everyone. And in some way you can say China is now doing the same in Africa.
I get that all areas should be covered, but I'm not sure you would get you desired result. History GCSE covers 16 subjects over 2 years (?), so depth is always going to be absent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can add America to that list too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. No genocide committed by European settlers. If only. Myopic if you don't/won't see that.

To stop Africans from uniting and rebelling, Europeans emphasized their differences, made them compete for resources and opportunities, used gifts, favours and military support to keep them in discord. Divide and rule worked like a charm and all warring tribes today can trace the origin of that war back to colonial masters. Resources are limited and fights are inevitable.

Extremely pertinent to what happened in Rwanda.

Morning mate.
Rwanda or tribal conflict, civil war, ethnic and religious violence in Africa is all white Europran inspired divide and conquer?
No responsibility taken by Africans and tens of millions so easily led?
Not saying this is unthinkable, but when will Africans take charge of their own destiny and create stable peaceful fair societies?
China is now all over the place in Africa, as are Islamist oppressors.
..

Morning. Afternoon now I think, it’s been one of those days. How the Belgians treated, grouped and entrenched differences between Hutu and Tutsi (AFAIK one could move between the two prior to colonisation) during their time in charge, where they reshaped administration and categorised roles depending on how it suited them, resulted in identifiable animosity between the artificially assigned Hutus and Tutsis. To absolve these particular Belgian colonialists from any responsibility is abhorrent in my view, and that appears to be what you were implying.
Of course you can look at the actions of the interhamwe and other hutu power groups, but even the most rudimentary root cause analysis focuses a significant proportion of the blame on the colonialists.
You do realise that ethnic identity cards, cards instigated by the colonialists to consolidate the division created and exploited by the colonialists, were used to identify who would be slaughtered.
I’ll be honest as you’ll appreciate the honesty; I’m genuinely flabbergasted and quite disappointed at your response.

Wasn’t talking about genocide or atrocities though. We were talking about colonised countries not being at the bottom of the food chain like HK, Singapore and America.
Nice post BMCL didn’t know much of that, horrible but interesting to read.

The indigenous people were victims, but that's okay because after committing a genocide the European settlers made a success of it?
Oh and there was that little matter of throwing their British masters out. Even though they were mostly British themselves.
Surprised you didn't know any history of Hutu and Tutsi rivalry.

I didn’t say it was ok either lol ! You alright this morning??
I remember what went down at the time and the lack of international involvement in sorting it but I didn’t know much about the history leading to the strong division as BMCL highlighted, no.
I do appreciate that the thread seems to want the idea of making History mandatory for GCSE
I concur
Ridiculous to make it a choice of that or geography and act like the two are comparable
Is history not compulsory for GCSE? Can’t remember if it was for me or not.
Am I alright? No I'm alt- left.
Comparing a couple of city states to African nations isn't really a fair comparison either. Could you imagine the wealth in S.Africa had the Dutch and British not stolen all their diamonds and gold?
The troubles in Central Africa could be removed if the west wasn't so addicted to the rare earths and other natural resources.
Wasn’t comparing either. Just assign to the list of former colonies that weren’t at the bottom of the food chain. That’s all.
Alt left 😂🤦♂️
