Take a step back for a moment, and it’s absolutely shocking that that’s probably the best way for them to quickly recoup a significant chunk of the votes they’ve lost to Reform - just pick any white, middle-aged man to lead the party.

The fact that Reform have ridiculous, uncosted policies won’t matter a jot if the main parties don’t come up with a strategy to deal with their threat.

Look at Trump.

Farage is a skilled campaigner and the people he appeals to won’t care if a policy is fully costed - he will lock in on the soundbites that resonate with the electorate.

People really need to get past this idea that just because most well educated people see through them, that they’re unelectable.

IMO Starmer should stop trying to fight them at their own game and start focusing on discrediting their history.

Farage has been allowed to get away the car crash of Brexit because most of the main parties are too scared to talk about it.

I’d suggest they’d be better off ignoring Reform completely, rather than giving the media additional opportunities to talk about them, and instead focus on talking about positive, constructive and progressive policies they’re implementing - on improving the heath service, on homebuilding, on improving opportunities for young people, on wages and working conditions, on energy independence and the green transition, on rebuilding our relationship with Europe - which will resonate with their base and ensure they don’t haemorrhage votes to the Greens and Lib Dems.

Shift the narrative. There are facking myriad policy areas more important than bloody small boats and the level of English that visa applicants speak. Stop allowing yourselves to be distracted, baited and corralled, and take control of the conversation.

Next time I’m home and I overhear anyone complaining about small boats or refer to the asylum seekers they carry as ‘illegal immigrants’, I’m gonna start swinging, I swear.

I personally think labelling Farage as Truss 2.0 is a lovely line and they are right to go on the attack.

UK politics is as much about positioning vs the opposition as it is about presenting your own policies (sadly).

It’s not as if Farage doesn’t spend his time attacking the government, is it?
