This is a bit of a generalisation but everybody in the UK wants great public services, but really nobody wants to be the one to pay that extra bit more in taxes to pay for it.

It just so happens that its the Tories who are in power who think the poorer should pay more taxes than the richer population.

My personal view is that at the moment, the way the economy is, the richer should bare more of the brunt of taxes, because they can handle the financial impact a lot better than the poor.

I accept the view of the wealthy when they say things like "Why should I pay for the NHS if I use private health care". I get that, its just the way things are at the moment, the UK should be about helping one another.

Massive generalisation, the amount of money that goes into our public services is unreal, and has been for decades, yet I get atleast one cancelled train a week, delays near enough every day and traffic everywhere I go.

I imagine a lot of high earners, working for financial institutions, and big corporations, have their salaries adjusted to include tax burdens.

'The 1% pay disproportionately much' is a right-wing canard. They only pay a lot of tax because wealth inequality has risen so drastically since a more extreme version of capitalism took over. Manufacturers of super yachts and Ferraris are booming. Luxury real estate is doing great. The gap is widening. The super rich aren't paying too little tax.

Richard Branson is the definition of what we're talking about. Greedy git who wants his fingers in every pie and doesn't even choose to live on our shores and has to live on a private island because of his inflated ego.

We're told to admire this man. I hate him. If he had his way the NHS would be fully privatized and he'd own half of that too.

Capitalism isn't a good thing. It breeds greed.

Disgusting.

Well theres another story.
In regard to the abuse of funding by private rail franchises, when initially the privatisation of public transport, specifically rail, was meant to increase competition, improve services, drive down costs, and ultimately save money pouring from the public coffers.
Pretty much failed on all counts.

I don't blame them for dodging tax.

What is the reason for paying more tax the more money you earn?

It's almost half their wages gone into tax
not forgetting every single item you buy is taxed already

----------------------------------------------------------------------

You really can't believe that?

So somebody who is on 300k or £3m a year should pay same as somebody on 30k a year?

You must be a Tory

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No,
what are the bands
20%
40%
45% ?

Why should you have to pay almost half your wages to the government if you earn more money?

Even if you earnt 1 million pounds a year and still paid 20% of it to the government you would still be paying far more than someone on 20k who is also in the 20% band.

It doesn't bother me people dodging taxes considering everything these days costs ridiculous amounts of money - because every thing you buy already has a huge amount of tax added to it, THEN they add VAT

and the countries still in debt.

Makes me angry though that people who have personal wealth of over £50m try and save a little bit extra. Greedy sods.

If you can't live the life you'd want paying the right amount of tax on £10m plus a year then you need to have a good long look at yourself.

Tax havens and tax breaks really are hurting the world. For example a conservative estimate says that the UK loses out on £70bn every single year through lost tax. Imagine how great out our country would be if everyone paid what they owed eh?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wouldn’t that be something.

It’s annoying that the man on the street pays more than his fair share yet the celebs and powerful get away with it.

There was also a thing as well that the tories charge a premium rate phone line for people out of work making benefit enquiries? Facking obscene that. You can't afford food but have to footbthr bill for a 50p per minute phone line in order to claim job seekers allownance.

Have no idea how they can get away with that

------------------

They didn't, those nasty Scottish Nationalists successfully campaigned for the telephone tax to be scrapped.

Exactly. The top 1% have around 24% of the wealth and pay about 28% of the income tax (overall taxation contribution is substantially lower). Bearing in mind the decreasing marginal utility of money (hence why you have these increasing tax bands) it's very hard to argue that the burden on the top 1% is too much. Furthermore, the effect of globalisation for developed countries tends to be to increase the wealth of the richest and decrease that of the poorest, so for increased trade to be a Pareto-efficient outcome a significant amount of redistribution has to occur, otherwise it would be beneficial for the majority of the population to remain in an autarkic situation whereas trade allows everyone to get better off.

Our spending on public services is not disproportionately large (and as noted, the private monopolies rail franchises have is nothing to do with our public goods). The main reason our economy is so poorly performing is the failure to enact any fiscal stimulus, the woeful levels of productivity and a real struggle to increase investment levels. Hopefully some more base rate rises will boost the latter but will come at the expense of the budgets of homeowners.

I'm more concerned that they were even allowed to implement that in the first place. Do you know what their arguement was for charging a premium rate phone line for people out of work and with no money? It'd be a laugh to hear.

-------------------------

Don't know what the argument was, there isn't any reasonable justification to it though.

Its what the Tories do though, they try and push through awful policies through the back door with the hope nobody realises.

Thankfully with this case, and others, somebody fishes it out and calls them out. The Tories back-track and then get their reputation of consistent u-turns.
