Isn't there a theory that when Botham did so well against the Aussies it was more or less the Aussies reserves and youth as most of the main players were playing in the Kerry Packer World Series.
======================================

I think a number of young players around Botham's era may have not got an initial chance if it weren't for many players going to join Kerry Packer, but I feel Botham more than proved his worth in the side and performed against both strong and weak Australian sides.

Simonbhoy you have delusions of grandeur and you need to get your brain examined by a psychiatrist.

Billy that is just about right but I have heard about every player in that lineup except Jack Hobbs.

If based on the ashes alone then Anderson should not be nowhere near the team.
It's difficult to debate the others to be honest. Some may have picked one of the old English greats or Pietersen ahead of Border or Waugh, but it's close either way.

I would have included Graeme Thorpe in joint test eleven lineup as he was an excellent middle order batsman.

This is a bit like surveys picking your all time favourite record. It is always the recent ones that win. I would have Knott over Gilchrist. Better wicketkeeper and you should not need a batsman like Gilchrist if you have the best top 6 in ashes history. Knott got tons against Lillee and Thomson and Holding and Roberts anyway. There are great names from history like Thomson, Tyson, Larwood and Snow, who should be close to selection as well.
