A really, top notch defender. That can't be disputed.

There is a small group of OF players (e.g. McNeill, Greig, Burns, Jardine to name but 4) who will always attract respect from both Celtic and Rangers fans. Those men who are still alive won't be around forever - it's good that we show respect whilst they are still with us

I think it was his wife or maybe his daughter who done the interview about his condition a while back and although there were rumours, I think the drastic deterioration in him was scary still.

Met him in Seville for the final and he and a few others stood and had a beer with everyone (not me obviously being 13 ) for a good hour or so. Great guy and one of the clubs greatest ever.

Zico - legend is a word that is used far too cheaply to describe football players these days. It is 100% appropriate when describing Billy

I was privileged to meet Billy for my first and only time in October 2014 at the Tyneside No 1 CSC Dinner. He was still reasonably lucid (although nowhere near as sharp as he once was). He gave me a lovely warm bear hug just as my missus was taking a photo of him and I - will never forget that moment

As far as career accomplishments go he's not got many above him and by all accounts is a good man as well. Sad that he's not in better health though

Met him and a few others in the Living Room in Manchester a few years ago when we lost 3-2 in the CL.

Great company all of them but fwck me they could put away the drams. 😂

Stb....great post mate.

Understand why you mentioned those other players and there are a few others we could all name.

Danny McGrain will always be my favourite of the true legends of the Scottish game but it cannot be denied that Billy McNeill stands above all of them in terms of achievements.

I met him several times and my brother knew many of them well ...Caesar was an appropriate name got the big man.

And well said curly.

Is he the only Scot to lift the European cup...not sure if souness did it.?

The image of billy lifting the cup in Lisbon is a real sporting icon. Coming back and winning the centenary league.... unbelievable.

I think both souness and John McGovern have done it

They definetley don’t make footballers like that in Scotland anymore.

Mags - Souness was Liverpool captain in 1984 - also, John McGovern was captain at Forest in 79 and 80

I don't remember ever seeing Billy play
Me being pure young

However his achievements speak for themselves
Always seemed a very modest and humble gent

I love the fact that, as young players, young managers and, in later life, Billy and John Greig never had a bad word to say about each other. 100% mutual respect - flying in the face of the "hatred" that some many "fans" have for each other

Aye Stevie
It's a different world
To many phanies

Football these days

Steve, I think on here we epitomize what Greig and McNeill stood for.
