Wenger - Euro Super League

Probably not the best time to be investing millions/billions in a football club then!

I think it will be the stepping stone to getting rid of the premier domestic leagues all over europe or the world.

After this it will progress to a European pyramid league structure. Money talks and this would be massive, would be better for football teams in general also. Gives every team in the world/europe a chance to be huge. No longer will your team be restricted to its size purely based on its geographical location

Have you seen the viewing figure for the Champions league this season? Pathetic at best! No one in England wants to watch AC Milan vs PSG.....no viewing figures no money!
A European super league with say only Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool would kill off Sky money from all over the world! Again who wants to watch Chelsea vs Porto?..............does anyone (bar there own supporters) Watch the champions league until the semis or if there is nothing on TV?
A European super league would kill off football for me, what is the point........

I would say that ther is more demand for Man U v Porto then Man U v Bournemouth. Especially in a global sense. You are aware this would replace the Champ league. So you actually strengthened this argument by saying the figures for CL were pathetic, ie something needs to be done to improve them.

The point is that football has grown now and with less trouble and effort required to travel nowadays then it makes sense.

As I said it would also make the game fairer, rather than just have the wealth spread over 3 countries every team from every country could get a crack at it.

You really think the big boys will allow the smaller teams the same money?

posted on 11/5/18

Plus Man U vs Bournemouth would be watched by more people world wide as it's a prem game, No one cares about the CL till the semis....that would be the same in a super league....the figures would soon disappear because you A. Wouldn't pay more to watch it....and B. Have no feelings to a team that's not your own!

Everyone would be bored with it in 2 seasons....Christ the CL is boring now imagine it every week

Football has been going downhill ever since the formation of the Premier League.

the Premier League has always been about grabbing more and more money for the big clubs.

A European Super League is just the next step whereby 'our' big six, Real Madrid, Barca, Milan, PSG, etc can fill their pockets with more and more doe and leave everyone else behind in the process.

This all feeds into the reason why i'm not bothered about our relegation. I've had this view for years. I don't want my club to be part of an 'industry'. I want it to be something i'm involved with as a form of escapism and what level the club is at is fairly immaterial.

You'll get much higher viewing figures for Man United vs Barca on a Saturday afternoon than you would get for Wolves vs Huddersfield on a Tuesday night. Besides, it's the big clubs driving this and not the likes of Sky. The big clubs will generate more money from this at the expense of the rest.

I think we are more likely to see the top flight of all the top domestic leagues reduced to say 16 teams, and then UEFA reinstating the 2x group stage of the CL. This would would ensure there aren't too many games a season, whilst also setting up more heavyweight CL clashes.

Man U vs Bournemouth might be watched, but Burnley vs Palace won't be pulling many punters in. The top 6 clubs are on nearly every weekend as they generate viewing figures, clubs like Bournemouth don't.

that and its only a matter of time before TV deals become obsolete. Teams are now looking into setting up their own streaming services as they know how much more money can be made from it. TV is changing in general and there is no way football will not follow suit.

Also it will be a stepping stone to having multiple staged pyramid leagues for all European teams for them all to be able to progress through promotion to the higher leagues.

True, the game changes so fast. 10 years ago a large ground was important financially, now it makes up less than 30% of the top 6 clubs revenue.

I've been reading that the next big thing is clubs selling VR experiences of their games.

No you wouldn't if you had to pay an extra £20-30 a month, which they would find a way to do, just like why the CL is doing rubbish on BT!

I had Sky so I could watch my team, I would not pay an extra £20-30 to watch Barca vs Man U!!

But if a Euro league comes in, and 2 TV packages are offered - euro and domestic, most United fans are going to pay to watch them play

Barca
Madrid
Juve
Bayern

Rather than:

Bournemouth
Huddersfield
Palace
Burnley

At the moment of course a Wolves fan would pay to watch the prem games rather than CL, but if a euro league comes in then the TV packages offered will look radically different

posted on 11/5/18

If it's all on Sky fair enough but if it's over 2-3 different packages which it probably would be, No one who doesn't follow a team in it will pay.....no way in God's name would I pay extra to watch the CL now, no matter what format it is

posted on 11/5/18

Plus I'd rather watch Palace Burnley over PSG vs Athletico Madrid

A euro league could make the Prem exciting again if the big boys either don't play in the Prem or don't take it seriously due to the euro league. It could be like the old days with u fancied teams doing well, a bit like a modern day championship.

You might start seeing youngsters supporting their local teams again as there would be something to compete for.

Call me old fashioned but I cant see what's wrong with what we have now!

They have been on about this for the last 15 years and I still don't see how it can be done......the novelty would soon get boring!

Domestic league/European cup ....I can't see what's wrong with that?

You need to look back at my comments over the last 3 years. I've virtually stopped going to matches and i've said time and time again that i'd prefer relegation over staying in the Prem just to line somebodies pockets.

You really think a global audience is more interested in watching your lot against the Udders on a week night than the mighty Man U and Barca?!

But that's your perspective. We're talking about the perspective of the global audience who mainly follow the big clubs.

I couldn't see what was wrong with the old European Cup but it all changed so the big clubs could make more money and sustain the advantage they have over clubs like yours and mine.

When they see clubs like Wolves trying to muscle in on their territory they'll just close ranks again make it impossible to break into the cartel of greed.

As I said very few people will pay for Sky/Bt/ and any other TV package! Same around the world! If you pay £25v for Sky you are not going to pay another £25 to watch the champions league, no one cares about it that much!
