I think the average United fan would rather have had Liverpool's season and their style of play than ours last year.

Ultimately, the difference between finishing 2nd & 4th is pretty meaningless - The prize is the same.

Nobody is disputing this.

What's in dispute is whether league position is a fair trade off for entertaining football if the prize is ultimately the same? It clearly isn't, for most fans.

Not forgetting the fact Liverpool for the last 4-5 games played weakened teams in preparation for the CL final

If we played entertaining football and finished fifth, people would soon change their tune and complain about that.

You say its not mutually exclusive, ok fair, but its also not 2000 anymore. there is more competition from the top 6 teams to get in that top 4.

That's why Mourinho will lose the fans this season and be gone in the summer. The boo-boys will be out for him this year if we don't see a bit more ambition from him. He won't survive another home defeat to City, if he sets up with a back 6 again.

That's because it was the vocal minority for years inside the stadium. Once it became apparent that he had lost the overwhelming majority he was gone within 12 months.

First of all I would say that Arsenal is quite a special case. Wenger had been at Arsenal for such a long time and done such a great job (at least for the first 60% of his time there) that he was in a special position. Not many managers enjoy that at their club and Jose hasn't earned that level of respect at United.

Secondly, if Jose loses the fans this season and there is regular booing by the majority of the stadium, he will be gone. There was the seeds of unrest in the stadium last season. On a few occasions there were boos and also quite often chants for the team/manager to attack. I think if the football is largely poor come Christmas and we aren't top/within a few points of top, the pressure could start to build.
