Ronaldo left La Liga as he lost the battle with Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian having led Barcelona to 3 league titles, Ronaldo had spent years desperately trying to match his rival's achievements, but eventually gave up and basically admitted that Vermaelen was the better player, having won more league titles.
