We didn't need a Prince of a middle eastern country to set our records and win trophies though.

You might have done though, you’ll never know

No, no, no. You're far better off with the in bred Good 'ol boys from Deliverance County whose stewardship is creaming in the money that lets the ground fall to bits, lets the rodents into the cafe, and pays the ancillary staff in buttons. And all the time you get class entertainment on the pitch with Bailly doing his sliding on-pitch celebrations before a goal is scored, Fred passing to his invisible friends on the touchline, Paul 'value for money' Pogba lollopping around with attitude. What more could you ask for? Oh, Mourinho...

United have always had money if and when needed I don’t think debt hamstrung you nearly as much as Wenger
---------------------

Whether or not the transfer funds were available, I think that SAF, like many fans, was worried about the club's finances and future. As the years have progressed and our revenue streams have increased, those fears have more or less evaporated. However, at the time I believe that SAF made the decision to spend only what was necessary to keep us competitive, whilst sacrificing some of our style. It was a bit of a balancing act for him and he did a fantastic job. Perhaps, as you suggest, too good a job, in that he thought he was handing over a better squad that he really was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Could be on the money, but at the same time he dropped about 100m over two windows not long after they bought in, not many clubs could of afforded that at the time and that was before the sale of Ronaldo. I just think he didn’t buy because he didn’t need to, I can’t remember many big money impulse purchases like you’ve seen in the past few years. Maybe that has as much to do with the change in Chief Exec though. Has he ever spoken about it in any bios?

Of course not, you had paragons of virtue like Louis Edwards, Robert Maxwell and Rupert Murdoch to set your financial model in motion.

Perhaps all the people who lost their pensions to Maxwell's greed take solace in the fact you were a good team a decade ago.

2/3 of them had nothing to do with the club and louis edwards gave a few backhanders for some meat contracts. who cares

The OP is an idiot. I find City far less entertaining to watch now that they are better than us.

Our average net spend after the takeover and before Ronaldo was sold was 18m. After Ronaldo was sold that more or less doubled, but his biggest signing after that was RVP at 24m. That was 11 years after we had spent 28m on Veron.

3 times. What's your point?

I don't recall anyone saying he had always worked on a budget. I think you are confused.

I wouldn't say the rot had started while Fergie was in charge but he did leave a squad well short on quality.

A testament to the man that he could win a league with the players he did.

Are you a bit dim binky? That doesn't say that SAF always worked on a tight budget. Just that the squad he left for Moyes wasn't great and that he did well to win the league with it . Stop making things up.

Maybe you could explain that comment to me, in words the dim can understand.

The poster is talking about the final squad that SAF left behind. It wasn't the best, but he still managed to win the title with it.

How you think that equates to someone saying that SAF ALWAYS worked on a tight budget is beyond me. You need to learn to read properly. No-one has suggested such a thing. Just that he likely curbed his spending slightly after the Glazer takeover.

He gave RvP a contract that no other club would even consider to give you an edge in the title race that year.

Anyone else would have been accused of buying the title.

In the real world City offered RVP 300k per week but he opted to join united on lower deal.

posted on 23/8/18

That isn’t the real world though to be fair.

Wrong on so many levels.

City not only refused to meet his pay and length of contract demands, they also refused to pay his exorbitant agents fees.

He may well have done, we still didn’t offer him 300k though

That’s what Mancini fell out with our board about initially.

Less than 300

I don’t think City have ever been prepared to break their wage structure and pay somebody more than the OGs - Kompany, Aguero, and formerly Yaya. None of whom were reported to be on anything near 300k at the time.

4 years after Berbatov at 30m though 😜
