God article, but I do think you are doing Spurs a bit of a disservice, by saying that had Spurs only got Europa football this season, then all the players would have jumped shipped. They simply would not have. Spurs are not some little tin pot small time club, that have suddenly been elevated to a couple of seasons mixing it with the best. During my lifetime, they have won plenty of trophies, been the best themselves, and are now trying to get back to the very top, new stadium, top striker in world football, world cup winning captain, world class defenders. The club is going in the right direction, and they will not just collapse again, if they had to play Europa football. Plenty of the best clubs in Europe have to do that from time to time, don`t mean to say all their players will leave.

I would still fancy any United team with Giggs, Keane, Beckham, Scholes, Nevilles at their prime to turn over the current Man City side, who did have a good Prem season, but failed miserably in the CL, whereas United went on to win it.

Unpopular opinion admittedly.

FFS throwing the towel in already. What`s the point of being in the CL, if you want to get knocked out in the group stages?
You did say it would be an unpopular opinion, so you got that bit right.
The point was that I want to win a trophy and think we are way more likely to win the Europa than the CL.

“Spurs need to win a trophy”. Does this mean any trophy?
Personally I don’t care one little bit about the League Cup, that’s for teams like Birmingham or Swansea to celebrate. As usual it will be awarded to the team with the best B side who has also got lucky with the draw. We won it in 2008 and it did precisely nothing for us as a club.
The FA Cup is more appealing, and I would love to win that. But the matches come thick and fast at a time where the league comes down to the wire and CL is in full swing. Again, success depends a lot on the draw (Arsenal’s p*ss easy home runs to the trophy recently). We could ‘prioritise’ the FA Cup and then draw City away in Round 3. Even if we do win it, it’s hardly likely to keep players here on its own.
So it comes down to the PL and CL. As usual I’m sure we’ll put in a good challenge for the title, but with City’s shameless financial doping it will be tough. A CL run would be fantastic, but we need to be somewhat realistic: last year Liverpool has one of the easiest ever routes to the final and still didn’t win.
Finishing top 4 and the odd CL run is (sadly) the most important thing in improving club stature. It’s most important for keeping our players and manager, and attracting new stars and a larger fanbase. League Cups are irrelevant and FA Cups have a fleeting impact. I wish it was different, but that’s where modern football is at.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't stand Liverpool as much as the next person but to call their run to the final easy is bull.
They played the best team in PL history and a team that won the group of death with us and Atletico en route to the final.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Man City was a tough tie, I’m not for a second questioning that. But a Europa style group of Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor followed by Porto in the R16 is absolute garbage, and getting Roma in the SF is the stuff of dreams. I don’t care if Roma pipped a very average Chelsea side to top their group, they were not a good side.
Anyway, I like Liverpool and am not one of those who turns everything into Spurs v Liverpool. But nobody will ever convince me their route to the CL final was hard - Spurs played tougher sides and only played 8 games!

Overall though Sandy Spurs currently don't have the same gravitas Arsenal have, Arsenal were in the CL every season for like 16 years, that regularity builds the name.
It's not a dig it's just true, but Spurs' rep is growing every season they qualify, it takes time.
We won the CL in 2005, means little now to young players who were like 5 or something when we last won it.
You can't claim a European trophy won in the 60's counts today towards attracting a player Sandy.
Young lads are watching the CL and playing FIFA, the teams they see on TV having big European nights is what they remember, not a cup won when they didn't exist.
So my point is that spurs need regular CL qualification now to build that reputation as a modern, regular CL team.

The point was that I want to win a trophy and think we are way more likely to win the Europa than the CL.
Unless you disagree, sandrew?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well we are more likely to win the League Cup than the Europa, but I doubt you would suggest Spurs play their first team in that competition. And why cannot use my correct user name, instead of putting silly childish other names. How you would like me to refer to you as Edinspunk?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well Sandra Beige.
That comparison has no relevance whatsoever as you don't drop into the League cup if you fail in another cup. I could explain to you how European football works if it helps?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well Edinspunk, I don`t think your original point was about how European football works, just that you wanted Spurs to get knocked out of the CL and drop into the the Europa. Hoist the white flag and all that, by the sounds of it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you missed the point of another comment, for the 5th day in a row and threw your toys out the pram again? Good to know.

Chelsea / United and even Arsenal can afford to miss out on it at the moment, united and Chelsea have won it recently, and while Arsenal have never won it they're a very well known CL club around Europe.
Without trying to be funny mate, but Spurs are also a well known team around Europe, they have still won more European Trophies than Arsenal.

Celtic are like in the CL every season, don`t mean anything, most years they don`t get out of the qualifying rounds. Plenty of clubs from lesser countries are in the CL every season, they are still not bigger clubs than Spurs.
