To win the Nations League.

So there is no point to this thing after all

A fuller answer would be; to bring competitive football in instead of friendlies, and give a more level playing field across all the different standards of nations.

So who wins a place to the Euros? Scotland?

What do you mean what's the point? It's a competition in it's own right.

There is a meaning because they are major tournaments

I thought the whole point of the Nations League was to replace pointless friendlies with a competitive tournament that rewards those who take it seriously

Basically winning the Nations League is the equivalent to winning the UEFA Cup when there was no CL qualification for the winners. Just a pointless tournament

Nobody in England ever took the UEFA Cup seriously, everybody knows this. You think the major nations in Europe care if they win the Nations League? The likes of Spain, Germany, France, etc? World Champions top of their group.

They did before CL money became the be all and end all, it was a serious competition which clubs, players and fans wanted to qualify for and win.

You would think that, but it doesn't always happen.
England probably won't need that fall back option, but if they do it is there.

evolve in time into a second qualification route rather than a guaranteed play off for qualification

Don't think that will happen, as there will be a year of no competitive football.

It could take over the traditional qualifying though.

I take it you missed Spain v England? The Spanish were livid. They took it very seriously and lost to the better team.

In the world cup it was irrelevant because we played lesser teams. Now we have beaten top teams, the tournament doesn't matter. Some people are never happy.

I don't think he has seen any of it. Misjudged the mood around Europe completely.

Why would the Spanish not be livid having their asses handed to them in their backyard? Do you think if it was just a normal friendly match they would have acted any differently?

Why can’t people call a spade a spade. This is basically just a friendly tournament. Like the Emirates Cup or something. Nice to win it but who cares if you don’t
