Ronaldo was winger. Rooney a centre back.

I'd like to see this.
Without Lukaku or Fellaini on the bench that is
Van Nistelrooy remains the best lone striker I've ever seen.
He did frequently play with 1 of Giggs/Scholes just off him as a support striker though.
Real shame Forlan never clicked in England. Looking back now knowing what we do about both players that looked like an awesome combination on paper.
But onto the OPs main point.
I'm a fan of two strikers. It's probably the necessary tactical response to today's trend of ball playing centre backs.
With three forwards there is little in the way of link up play as they're not close enough together. It seems to rely more on moments of individual magic and late runners from midfield for support.
Depends on the midfield.
If you have a decent balanced pair of wingers then you only need one and let the centre mids take up forward positions.
Depends who you are playing. If you play 2 against a good side that has an extra man in midfield you are taking a big chance. Don't matter how many striker you've got if they ain't getting the ball.

Also depends on the striker, Aguero can play lone he’s brilliant at it he also with negredo formed a decent partnership.
With the way our teams midfield is and the balance we have I prefer Sergio as a 1 up top.
The days of two up front are long gone.

Only if someone’s got the personnel for a 3 5 2.
442 is a thing of the past.

This side plays to the individual strengths of these players, and most likely would be a fine side against whatever we'll face. Why can't our manager, who is paid in the millions, come up with an equally balanced 11? I like this

The whole Negredo thing was a puzzler. He was brilliant till he dislocated his shoulder against West Ham, then he wasn't. Pellegrini was a real enthusiast for 442, and once the Beast got crocked it never worked for us.
Such a shame he was ripping it up as our second striker.
