Jesus, his last 2 seasons here he was unplayable
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His penultimate season. His last season wasn't as good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Still better than most
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well still wouldn't use the word 'unplayable' for that season. There was a drop off in his quality from the season before.

posted on 21/3/19

Why not? He was still brilliant that season even if he wasn’t as good as the season before. There’s a reason he was going head to head with Messi for the wpoty in 2009.

You didn’t watch him did you? Bet you are literally just looking at the stats

The stats were pretty impressive. Just not by Ronaldo standards. His stats would have been even better if Rooney, Tevez and Berba could have finished their dinner that season.

Of course I did, but that one season he was unreal and the other was pretty good.

Pretty good. He came 2nd in world player of the year, got into uefa team of yr and fifa team of the year and was massively influential in us winning the league, league cup and getting us to a CL final. Just because he has been extraordinary before and after doesn’t mean he was very good that season and like I said better than most.
He is the greatest player to play in this country ever never mind the Premier league. Nobody since the inception of the Premier league even comes close

Erm...in your view.

Ronaldo (in my view) wasn't as influential as Henry and apart from the one golden season for Ron at Utd his best years were all at Real.

Who said he was as influential?

Cantona was more influential than Henry; Doesn't mean he was a better player.

No he just wasn't. Henry influenced the entire league whereas Cantona merely influenced the easily led and immature class of 92.

I mean if wearing your collars up, pouting a lot and karate kicking a fat lad pushes a 20 year old Paul Scholes to try harder then fair play

He won twice as many PL titles as Henry, and he did it in five seasons.

No Cantona, no United domination of English football for 20 years, period.

Andy Cole won more Prem titles than Henry so not sure what your point is?

Also unless Cantona played for 20 years at Utd I can't see how you attribute all of Utd's success solely down to him. Think perhaps Fergie and all the other players might have had something to do with it as well

As for the 'Period' bit oh dear

I loved Eric, but he wasn't the best ever foreign player in the PL; I'm not sure who was, probably Henry or Ronaldo, it depends on which team you support I guess.
But all United fans know Eric was the catalyst that began Fergies reign, his confidence, swagger, ability and work ethic ran through the club, and made us champions. Of course we had lots of very good players, but Eric made us great.

Yeah agree. Eric was a fantastic player and one who I admired from afar. think you lot might be over egging it a tad about his influence though. I'm pretty sure you'd have done pretty well without him

Ferguson himself said Cantona was the "catalyst who had a crucial impact on our success".

More widely, there were 13 non-British players on the PL's opening day in August 1992. Cantona was the first foreign superstar in the PL, and the likes of Emmanuel Petit have said that he was "the guy who opened the door for Frenchmen" who wanted to play in the PL.

When Cantona arrived at the club, we'd also won 2 of our last 13 matches. Fergie was on shaky ground. And without the immediate and incredible impact Cantona made, the ground simply wouldn't have been paved for the Class of 92 to come through.

Read what the Nevilles, Butt, Beckham and the rest have to say about him. They argue exactly the same.

He allowed for the rebuilding of Manchester United, and changed the future for foreign players in the PL.

Henry for sure.

He had 5 great seasons in England, won 4 PL Golden Boots, 2 Golden Shoes, set the assist-record and produced many magic moments.

Ronaldo only had 2 great seasons in England; 06-07 & 07-08.

For those saying Ronaldo was great in 08-09, Anelka beat him to the Golden Boot for goodness sake. United won that title due to their record-breaking defence, and in the CL, Ronaldo lost to Henry in the Final.

Ronaldo's 08/09 season was just as good as his 06/07 one.

posted on 22/3/19

Nah he was better in 06/07. The end product is similar but his general performances were better in 06/07. That’s still my favourte Ronaldo season. He was an absolute joy to watch.

That's what happened.

I said Henry had 5 great seasons in England and Ronaldo had 2.

But actually, Henry's 1999-00 season was just as good as Ronaldo's 2006-07, if not better. His numbers were better and he capped it off by winning the Euros where he was MOTM in the Final & SF.

So in terms of great seasons: Henry 6-2 Ronaldo (6-3 if we throw Ronnie a bone and give him 08-09).

posted on 22/3/19

Henry was outscored by Michael Bridges and Kevin Phillips in 99/00.

posted on 22/3/19

And Ronaldo was outscored by Benni McCarthy in 06-07.

Anyway, KP was unreal in 1999-00.

A worldie of a season.
