valencia was a solid defensive fullback and rarely got beaten thanks to being a specimen. Valencia pre jose fallout was imho as solid a defensive fullback as you will ever wish for and that i think AWB can ever be.

Yet he was lambasted for being unable to offer enough going forward. The same happened with darmian in his early days before he lost his confidence. So why will AWB be any different? because he is english?

After leaking goals like a sieve last season, the priority for me in a full back is can he defend. If he can get forward and cross a ball in, bonus, otherwise, let the forwards worry about that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
so you think the solution to our defensive frailities is a fullback with a single season's experience and who is poor going forward?
I guess you must be right since crystal palace were able to concede one less goal than our leaky defence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And his many great seasons had Robertson had before you signed him?

And he isnt poor going forward. He is just very good defensively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and how much did liverpool pay for robertson?

you don't pay stupid money for a player after one season unless you fell they fall inton the potential world beater category. Maybe I am blind and don't just see what everyone else see or maybe having watched a lot of young players flatter to deceive I am more of a cynic

Smalling hadn’t, but Jones had played 35 prem games to AWB’s 42, and was just as highly rated. £20m back then for a guy that had played 35 prem games was a lot of money. So they are comparable. However, it doesn’t mean that because Jones didn’t turn out the way we’d hoped that a signing in similar circumstances won’t either. Especially when you consider Wan Bissaka looks a better player than what we have in that position, whereas Phil Jones never did when we signed him.

Because he is still very young

What we need is for these players to be coached properly. Look at what Pep and Klopp have done with their fullbacks, they've coached them to the point that they are one of the in the league both in defence and attack.

A player of AWB's age has so much room for that to happen too, but like I said we need Ole to actually work on him in the training ground.

One of the best*

like i said I have seen many young players have a decent season and get overhyped. jones is one example of the hundred out there.
I personally have not seen enough to suggest that AWB is any better than any other overhyped talent that have come before to justify spending the amount being quoted.

ps I remember having the same conversation with people on here who were convinced renanto was the saviour and we should pay whatever we could to sign him

Ole is a shiiiiit manager though.

You lot need better.

Yeah that’s the thing. It’s not often you get young full backs that aren’t without their flaws, it’s usually on both ends, AWB is already a good defender, however.

Right back is a difficult market, there’s not that many around that tick all the boxes. I’d prefer a better attacking right back, but I can see the value in signing AWB as a long term solution to a long term problem.

Young player + big price tag does not automatically = over hyped.

Let's just have a little faith IF this happens.

you can and you should have faith

but like i have always done I will stay objective and try not to buy into the hype until he is a utd player. If he does become a utd i will pray for his success like I did for jones and shaw.

You could probably get Doherty for half of that.

Already a really good right back at a great age to improve even further. Would be delighted if we got him. Don’t know the ins and outs of our finances and how much we have to spend, so whatever the price may be as long as we don’t bankrupt ourselves or not leave enough to strengthen other areas then so be it.

Nelson semedo at Barcelona is available for around 50 million by all accounts and for me would be a better option

Pay Crystal Palace what they want for him, I can't take another season of Young at right-back to be honest.

You wouldn't have said that at the time though would you? Robertson has turned out better.

Shaw has been unlucky with injuries and of course the man utd manager malaise hasn't helped him at all

If we had bought Robertson from Hull for £8m most of our 'fans' would have moaned and cried about it.

We sadly live in an age where most people rate you by your transfer fee.

Liverpool got 4/5 quality signings for what we paid just for Lukaku. I hate them so much but credit where credit is due. After 20 odd years of bad recruitment they have finally sorted it.

If it means Ashley Young is is moved out the starting 11 then we should pay the £60m
