Winston you’re never gonna get a half decent full back for £20m, unless we have some world class scouting talent on the books. However, we don’t.

We have no strategy or structure in place when buying players, all we have is money and that’s the only technique we have in acquiring targets.

Dress it up how you like. £50 million for a kid who has had one decent season at right back is having your pants pulled down.

Will see what the specifics of the deal are though, to be fair.

Dunno where you keep getting this idea that he was only decent last season from

Do go on..?

Personally I think you could find a decent fullback with similar potential for a lot less money if it wasn't a PL club and a player who'd attracted a lot of British media attention last season.

£50m is a lot but that's the going rate if Palace want that much for the player. As he is an up and coming player his wages will be less than an established player's too so that will have been a consideration I'm sure.

With all the money in the game though through TV this kind of deal is inevitable.

United have a history of going big on young British/Irish talent and I hope AWB follows in the footsteps of Keane, Rio and Rooney and gives us years of great service.

i disagree here to be honest.

previously i would have but this season there does seem to be more structure in regards to the players we are looking at.

I mean ask anyone who watched him enough last season and they'll tell you he was a defensive monster, something which is backed up statistically too.

Like I said, he was the best defensive fullback in the league last season

You’re forgetting AWB was with the England U21 side until the other day. Since he got back, the deal was concluded within a day?

Very happy with this signing. More to come I hope.

Surely that was always likely though - the pants pulled down bit I mean?

Firstly there aren't that many options for full backs (either side) that aren't already at big sides and so very problematic to purchase. I'd argue there's a scarcity with RBs.

Secondly Palace are relatively rich as a well established EPL team. They certainly don't need to sell to raise funds.

Thirdly, you're Man Utd and everyone knows your financial power.

Personally I think getting your pants pulled down was fairly inevitable. Good signing though, think he'll do well for you.

Er, what's that got to do with your previous post?

You questioned why I said he'd only been good for one season. Made a mistake, I assume?

Of course, which is where our scouts and club management come in.

We don't have to buy him. It's right back, and there are almost certainly other players out there with just as much potential as him.

Ah I see.

I didn't mean that as a negative - decent / quality / whatever - the point was it's just one season.

winston would clearly like us to wait 12 months for him to have another very good season and pay an extra 20 million.

he won palaces young player of the year last year and player of the year this year, the kid clearly has talent

Yeh, that's what I would like.

Great interpretation of my points.

Not sure why the prices are being highlighted. PL clubs now have more money than ever. Palace don’t need to sell for 20/30mil. They can command a higher fee. Of course anything over 50/60 would have been too much. 50 is a very fair price

posted on 26/6/19

I'd be happy to sign a 27/28 year old in their peak for £30-35m if they had put in the season AWB did last year, although they'd probably cost more than that.

Add in the fact he's only 21 which is where the 'potential' came into it, and he can be your RB for 10 years, that's the premium on top.

Yes, maybe this is as good as he'll get, maybe it was a lucky season and he'll turn out awful, we have to hope that's not the case.
