He's an England international and had a bid of around 40m for him in Jan, it's no more obscene than what any other footballers get paid. He had 1 year left so it's better for Chelsea to pay him a bit more instead of losing him on a free.

It's an obscene amount of money for him to earn, regardless of how many other people earn it.

Every top flight footballer earns an obscene amount of money, so don't see the reason to single him out.

It's one thing valuing a player on potential but paying them a salary that only established and consistent players should command is where the game is going wrong.

It would be better to have guarantees built into under 21 contracts that they will be reviewed annually even if they are long term contracts.

£5.2m a year, £2.6m after tax. Not that crazy for athletes in the top tier of their sport.

I think the changing point may come when BSkyB and Virgin Media struggle.

Their business model is looking shaky, long term, and streaming companies will be able to match them soon.

The richest sports club in the world, Dallas Cowboys, has just 8 home games a year. It is TV money that has made sport ridiculous.
