He's an England international and had a bid of around 40m for him in Jan, it's no more obscene than what any other footballers get paid. He had 1 year left so it's better for Chelsea to pay him a bit more instead of losing him on a free.
It's an obscene amount of money for him to earn, regardless of how many other people earn it.
Every top flight footballer earns an obscene amount of money, so don't see the reason to single him out.
The reasons are in the article. Some situations are more noteworthy than others.
He took desperate Chelsea to the cleaners
It's one thing valuing a player on potential but paying them a salary that only established and consistent players should command is where the game is going wrong.
It would be better to have guarantees built into under 21 contracts that they will be reviewed annually even if they are long term contracts.
£5.2m a year, £2.6m after tax. Not that crazy for athletes in the top tier of their sport.
180,000 a year they reckon. Absolutely ridiculous

Was in the car yesterday and heard this on Talksport - they were saying what a decent deal it is for Chelsea.
The [football] world has gone mad.

Yep it's getting silly now
I’m waiting for the crash.
One day media companies will make a pact and say “nope not bidding” driving the price they pay and therefore the TV money for each team right down.

I think the changing point may come when BSkyB and Virgin Media struggle.
Their business model is looking shaky, long term, and streaming companies will be able to match them soon.
It's all your fault, the naive and gullible fan!
Paying relative fortunes to watch a mere game of
Football...paying through the nose for cheaply made
Merchandise.
The narrative from CEOs is let the fan pay for it all, they're all having a good laugh at the expense of
You, the fan...
Stop it and find a much more satisfying interest to
spend your money on.
CHO had Chelsea over a barrel.
Big potential
Last year of contract with interest from Bayern
Under a transfer embargo
Wouldn't have got the same in normal circumstances, would have only been the 80k

Don't say motor racing!
Sadly that's just modern football.
The richest sports club in the world, Dallas Cowboys, has just 8 home games a year. It is TV money that has made sport ridiculous.
I think Bale is on obscene money....
